SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,805, dated July 6, 1886.
Application filed January 27, 1885. Serial No. 154,147. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES RoDoLPrr BELANSKI and I{ANOVER Prrrs, citizens of the United States, residing at Nora Springs, in the county of Floyd and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ironing-Boards and Plaiting-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to an improvement in combined ironing boards and plaiting -n1achines; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and par-. ticularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of our invention is to provide a device that is adapted to be used as a shirt bosom ironing-board on one side and as a plaiting-machine on its reverse side.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of our device as adapted for use as an ironing-board. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the reverse or plaiting side.
A represents a shirt-bosom ironing-board, which is provided with the projecting reduced rounded end 13, to pass through the collar. of the shirt. From the rear end of the board project the metallic extensions 0, in between which is pivoted a stretcher, D, as at E, The extensions are secured to the board by suitable screws, and are let into the board so as to be flush with its sides. extensions are rounded, and the rounded end of one of them is provided with ratchet-teeth F. A slot, d, is made in the interior of the stretcher, and in this slot is secured a springwire pawl, G, which engages with the ratchetteeth and secures the stretcher at any desired point. In one edge of the stretcher is made an open slot, (1, in which is inserted one end of the shirt to be ironed. of wood, H, is then inserted in the open slot, and secures the fabric therein, while the ratchet-teeth and pawl enable the stretcher to be secured after it has drawn the shirt to any requisite tightness. A hook, I, is pivoted on the under side of the end 13, and is adapted to enter an opening, J, that is made in the board,
The rear ends of these A wedge-shaped piece and secure the under side of the shirt-collar against slipping when the shirt is stretched. Strips K L are secured on opposite sides of the board and project beyond the plaiting side thereof. The strip K is permanently secured by means of screws M, while the strip or side L is provided with the Z-shaped slots N, through which the screws 0 pass. When the screws are in the lower arms of the slots, the strip or side L is raised above the plaiting side of the board, so as to form a side therefor, as shown in solid lines in Fig. 2, and when the strip or side is moved so as to bring the screws in the upper arms of the slots its upper side will be on a line with the plaiting side of the board, so as to permit the needles 1 to be inserted into the keepers R during the operation of plaiting, which is proceeded with in the common way well known to those skilled in the art. On the projecting side of the strip or side K is inscribed a scale of inches, S, by which the plaiting may be measured as it is being performed.
The operation of our invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description and by reference to the accompanying drawings.
A combined ironing-board and plaiting-ma chine thus constructed can be manufactured and sold very cheaply, and possesses advantages of simplicity and efficiency, and is very conveniently and easily handled.
Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. The herein-described combined ironingboard and plaiting-machine, comprising the board A, having one side made plain for use as an ironing-surface, keepers on the opposite side of the board for the reception of the plaiting-needles, the stretcher at one end of the board, a hook or catch at the opposite end, the rigid side or strip K, and the adjustable side or strip L, as set forth.
2. The board A having one side made plain for use as an ironing-surface, keepers secured to the opposite side of the board for the recep tion of the plaiting-needles, and the stretcher located at one end of the board, as set forth.
3. The herein-described combined ironingboard and planting-machine, comprising the board A, having one side made plain for use as an ironing-surface, keepers on the opposite side of the board for the reception of the 5 plaiting-needles, the stretcher at one end of the board, the rigid side or strip K, and the adjustable side or strip L, as set forth.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as CHARLES RODOLPH BELANSKI. HANOVER IIITS.
Witnesses:
