Specification of Letters Patent. Pat nted June 8, 1915.
Application filed October 17 1914.. Serial in). 67,241.
To all whom it may concern q Be it known that I, WILEY C. LEDBETTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newbern, in the county of Dyer and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Kettle-Supports, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to kettle supports,
particularly open kettles of the type commonly employed in the open-air for boiling clothes, rendering lard, making apple butter and performing other likeservices, the object of the invention being to provide a Support whereby the kettle may be held firmly in working position and after use may be inverted and supported in such position so as to keep the interior thereof dry and clean, until itis desired to employ the kettle again. j
A further object of the invention is to provide a support which is adjustable to suit different sizes of kettle aswell as 1rregularities of ground surface, so "that the kettle may be maintained in a level position, and whereby the kettle may be locked against movement in either of the positions 7 set forth.
The invention consists ofthe features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is an elevational view showing the kettle supported in normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the kettle supported in inverted position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the kettle and the upper portions of the members of the support. Fig. 4 is a horizontal transverse sec-v tion on the line 41 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary inner side elevation of one of.
the standards. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the brackets and the bearing member associated therewith. Fig. is a ver- 'tical transverse section through the upper nected with the upright. These legs, are properly inclined and their outer ends. are arrangedto engage with 'or rest upon the ground, while the inner ends of the legs 4 1 are provided with heads 5 which lap the uprights and are secured thereto by a bolt 6 provided with a wing clamping nut 7. The
disks may be toothed or headed to form a locklng connection which is positive and reliable, and it will be'evident from this construction of-the tripod base that the legs of the bases may be adjusted to suit irregularities of ground surface, so that the kettle can-besupported upon a hillside or irregular surface while it is sustained ina horizontal position. 7
- Each standard is provided upon its inner face with a guide groove 8 to receive a vertically slidableor adjustable carrier bar 9 having a guide rib 10 engaging said groove, and further having a longitudinal slot 11 to receive a headed bolt- 12 provided with a wing clamping nut 13 whereby the carrier bar may be adjusted .and secured in adjusted position. Through the adjustability of the carrier bars upon the two standards the kettle 14, which is provided with the usual handles or ears 15, may be supported at a desired elevation above the ground surface or proper provision made for maintaining the kettle at a levelwhen the supports are disposed upon a hillside or irregular ground surface. I
Each carrier bar is formed with a longitudinally extending bearing opening 16 receiving a stem or spindle 17 upon a bracket jmember 18, the bracket members upon the carrier bars of the two standards being formed with bifurcated ears 19 to receive and engage the ears 15 at the opposite sides of the kettle, which bifurcated ears are provided with openings for the passage of cross pins 20 whereby they are held and retained in engagement 'with the ears against any possibility of casual displacement. Each carrier bar is formed with a:
transverse opening 21 for the passage of a locking pin 22, which is also designed to be rangement ofthe openings being such that thebracket may be fastened by. the pin in the normal position shown in Fig. 1 for the purpose of supporting the kettle in the usual manner in the performances of any of the functions described, while at the same tlme also permitting it to be locked or fastened in inverted position as shown in Fig. 2, in which position it may be sustained when not in use so as to prevent the accumulation of moisture therein as well as to a large extent preventing the entrance of dust, dirt and other foreign particles. 7
It will thus be seen that my invention provides a support for kettles which will hold the kettle in normal orinverted posiion, which is adjustable to different elevations to support the ke'tle at different dis tances above the ground, and the elements of which are also adjustable to enable the kettle to be supported in a horizontal or level position upon a hillside or other irregular surface, the advantages of which will be apparent.
I claim 1. The combination with a kettle provided with ears, of a support therefor comprising a pair'of uprights, carrier members adjustably mounted upon said uprights, brackets journaled upon the carrier members and adapted for engagement with the ears for movement in an arc of 180 to support the kettle in a normal or inverted position, and means for locking the brackets in such supporting position. i l
2. The combination with a kettle having ears, of supporting means therefor comprising a pair of uprights, legs adjustably supporting the respective uprights, carrier bars adjustably mounted at the upper ends of the uprights, brackets pivotally mounted upon the carrier bars and having bifurcated portions to receive and engage the kettle ears, means carried by the bifurcated portions of the brackets to hold the brackets in engagement with the ears, and means for locking the rackets at angles of 180 from each other, whereby the kettle may be supported in normal or inverted position.
3. The combination with a kettle provided with ears, of a supp rting means therefor comprising spaced standards, adjustable supporting legs for the standards, vertically adjustable carrier bars upon the upper ends of the standards, brackets journaled upon said bar-s and having bifurcated portions to re ceive and engage the ears of the kettle, whereby the kettle may be supported in normal and inverted positions, locking pins carried by the bifurcated portions of the brackets to engage the ears and hold said ears in engagement with said brackets, and a locking pin for engagement with each carrier bar and bracket to lock the brack t in the said supporting positions.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
