SHELF SUPPORT.
APPLIDATION FILED APR 14, 1905.
awuewboz wam? Z logh m SQQQQ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 13, 1906.
Application filed April 14, 1905. Serial No. 255,497.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosHUA SPEED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shelf-Supports; and
I'do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, J such as w1ll enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates detachable supports for shelves or other analogous articles; and its object is to provide a device adapted to be detachabl secured in place in the corner or angle of t e walls of a room, closet, case, article of furniture, or analogous structure, and to provide the device with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
T e device consists, essentially, of two detached rails arranged end to end and substantially at right angles to each other and adapted to engage the respective walls adjacent to the angle of the structure, spurs in the rails to prevent them from slipping on the walls, and a longitudinally expansible brace connecting the rails and adapted to force them against the walls, whereby they are detachably secured in place by the spurs and frictional contact with the walls, and in the combination and arran ement of the various parts, as will more fu ly appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of my device as it appears when in use and supporting a corner-shelf, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the same enlarged and partially brokenaway to show the construction.
Like numbers refer to like parts in both figures.
1 represents a shelf supported by the device. This shelf may of course be displaced by any other article of suitable shape to go in the corner of a room and rest on the device.
2 and 3 are rails or bars, preferably of wood, arranged end to end and substantially at right angles-to each other and also detached and adjustable toward and from each other.
to improvements in! They are also provided with spurs 9 or other analogous projections adapted to penetrate the walls of a room sufficiently to prevent the rails from slipping on said walls.
4 is a socket to receive the end 8 (preferably made conical) of the brace-rod 6. 5 is a screw-threaded socket to receive thefother end of the brace-rod, which rod is screwthreaded to fit said socket.
7 is a squared and perforated portion of the brace-rod, whereby it may be turned by a wrench or pin, and thus moved endwise by the screw-threads on its end and in the socket 5. The rails are thus forced apart by the brace-rod and firmly engaged with the walls and supported in place by the spurs and frictional contact of the rails with said walls.
From the foregoing the operation of my device Will be readily understood. It is easily and cheaply made and can be instantly placed in the angle of any room, closet, case, or other angular structure. It requires no special fastenings to hold it in place and can be instantly detached and removed without leaving any objectionable marks on the walls.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.' The combination of two rails arranged end to end and substantially at right angles to each other and also detached at their adj acent ends, spurs and sockets on the respective rails, one of said sockets being screwthreaded, and a screw-threaded brace-rod engaging the sockets and having a squared intermediate portion.
2. The combination of two detached rails arranged end to end and substantially at right angles to each other, spurs on said rails, a brace-rod having one end conical and the other end screw-threaded and also having a squared and perforated portion, a socket having a conical recess and attached to one rail, and a socket having a screw-threaded opening and attached to the other rail.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. JOSHUA SPEED. Witnesses:
PALMER A. JoNEs,
LUTHER V. MoULToN.
