a citizen of the United States, residing at Granite City, in the countyof Madison and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Sash and Door Vises, of which the following is a specification.

Thi invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in carpenterssash and door vise, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. The main object of my invention is to provide efficient means on the floor to hold a sash or door vertical while planing off the edge in fitting it to the opening; secondly, to construct such means so that it may be readily adapted to clamp articles of different thickness; and third, so that such means may be compactly folded into relatively small compass for carrying it in a tool box.

In the accompanying drawings on which like reference letter indicate corresponding parts, Fig. 1 represents a. side elevation of a device exemplifying my invention in position to clamp the edge of a sash or door; Fig. 2 a plan view of the same indicating its use near a wall; Fig. 3 a reversed plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. at an end view of the 30 right hand end of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 a partial section on the line 2 of Fig. 2 showing the engagement of a bar extension with the base of my vise; F ig. 6 a side view or" my vise folded; and Fig. 7 a top plan View of the same.

Sash and doors have to be planed on the edges for fitting in the openings and a bench and vise are not always convenient. My device may be used on the floor anywhere and. 40 will clamp the bottom edge of a 'door or sash inserted therein so as to hold it verti- Cally while the upper edge is being planed.

Referring to the drawings the letters A ndicate feet at the ends of abase preferably consisting oi? two members B B flexibly connected and provided with clamping jaws (1 between which the door or sash as indicated by dash lines may be inserted. These jaws are preterably hinged at Dto the 50 inner ends of the base members, and opposite each other as shown. Each jaw has a brace E one end of which is detachably connected at F with a bracket G on the upper part of the jaw, and the lower end is pivoted to a bracket H opposite the foot A and extending upward. When thus braced each aw is firmly held in its upper position, but by drawingout the pin F the jaw may be folded down upon the base and the brace will rest closely upon it as shown in Fig. 6.

The base members are loosely connected by means of rods I one end being fastened by a hook and nut J with one base member and the other end of each rod, of which there are preferably two, is slidingly engaged with brackets K on the other member B as shown. Also a bolt L passes loosely through collars M on the base members, and nut on the threaded ends of the bolt vary the adjustment apart of the jaws C.

\Vhen a door for instanceis set between the jaws, it rests upon the rod L or otherwise bears downon the center of the base so that the flexible connection are depressed and the jaws are brought together to clamp the door. Thus the weight of the door or sash-automatically holds the article clamped and it can be readily planed on the top edge. In case the floor is smooth and the device should slip, a bar extension N indicated by dash lines in Fig. 2 is engaged with the base by hook lugs. 0 Fig. 5 so as to temporarily hold the base away from the wall and allow of planing the end of the door at the top edge as indicated in Fig. 2. The bar extension can be readily disengaged when the device is folded as shown in Fig. 6.

The preferred construction of my base members thus provides upward extensions 0 hinged opposite each other at the inner ends of the base members and adjustably connected by guiding rods and bolt, which lat ter slides in the collars M before mentioned, so that the device is shortened by sliding the jaws together after folding as shown in Fig. 6, and the pin F may be inserted as shown in Fig. 7 to hold the device/in its shortened compact position. The bracket G is wide enou h to embrace the base 13 or i B when folder down thereon as in Fig. 6, and the bracket H raises the brace E high enough to fold snugly down on the jaw as shown in Fig. 6. Thus a simple, eflicient vise for the use described, is readily available for use anywhere in a house without nailing a cleat to a bench or the wall as sometimes is done. My vise can be'folded compactly for transportation and readily opened for use.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described comprising a base composed of two members having flexing connections,- --each mem her being provided with an upward extension opposing the extension onthe other member forming clamping jaws and hinged to its respective member for folding on said base, and having bracing means detachably maintaining said extensions in clamping position.

2. A device of the character described comprising a base composed of two members, connections adjustabiy connecting said members, upward opposing extensions hinged respectively to said members and folding down on said base, and braces detachably' maintaining said extensions in clamping position thereof.

3. A device of the character described comprising a base composed of two members having feet at their outer ends and opposing upward extensions at their inner ends, athreaded rod adjustably connecting said members and guiding rods each astened-to one member and siidabiy engaging the other member, substantially as described.

4. A device of the character described comprising a base composed of two members having downward extending feet at their outer ends and an upward bracket above each foot, opposing upward extensions hinged to the inner ends of said members,

and foidable back on the base, braces pivoted by their lower ends respectively in said brackets and detachably engaging said upward extensions in raised position and foldable compactly upon said extension when thelatter are folded on said base, and adjustable connections between the base memhere.
