EDWARD C. MEAD, OF ELKHART, INDIANA.
ATTACHMENT FOR LADDERS.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. MEAD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented new and Improved Attachments for Ladders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to ladders and has for an object to provide an attachment for a ladder, and adapted to support receptacles, packages and the like, on and above the ladder.
For the purpose mentioned use is made of notched retaining bars secured to the body of the ladder, railings mounted to swing on the retaining bars, means on the retaining bars and adapted to be disposed in the notches of the retaining bars for adjustably supporting the railings and thesaid railings being provided with means for supporting packages or receptacles thereon.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, a prop section being provided on the ladder to support the same; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a ladder in closed position with the railings disposed in folded position; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side view of the notched retaining bar and a supporting bar engaging the same; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 1t in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the various drawings, I provide a step ladder 10 having a prop section 11 hingedly mounted thereon and adjustably secured by a clasp 12. Bigidly secured to the ladder 10 are retaining bars 13 provided with a plurality of notches 1 1, and mounted to swing on the bars 13 by means of connecting bars 15 are railings 16 having laterally-extended portions 17, adapted to receive a board or shelf for supporting receptacles and the like. Suitable supporting bars 18 are mounted to swing on the railings 16 and provided with lugs 19 for disposal in the notches 1 1, to adjustably support the railings 16. Thus Specification of Letters Patent. Patentgd June 13, 1911,
Application filed September 27, 1910.
Serial No. 584,034.
it will be seen that by disposing the lugs 19 of the bars 18 in the highest notches 14, a receptacle or package can be supported on the portions 17 far above the height of the ladder. Furthermore, when climbing the ladder, the railings 16 can be grasped to aid the operator in ascending the ladder. In order to prevent any article, supported on the parts 17, from falling when the railings are adjusted, the bars 15 are constructed of equal length, thus establishing a parallel movement of the railings relative to the retaining bars. The railings described can be easily folded to lie fiat against the ladder, as will be seen in Fig. 2.
It will be understood that my device can be conveniently employed in conjunction with various kinds of ladders, and that the scope of the invention is defined in the ap pended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A ladder attachment, comprising retaining bars secured to the ladder, connecting bars mounted to swing on the retaining bars, railings pivotally engaging the connecting bars, and means pivotally engaging the railings intermediate the connecting bars and adapted to engage the said retaining bars to adjustably secure the railings relative to the said retaining bars.
2. A ladder attachment, comprising notched retaining bars mounted on the ladder, railings mounted to swing on the retaining bars, and means on the railings adapted to be removably disposed in the notches of the retaining bars to adjustably support said railings.
3. A ladder attachment, comprising notched retaining bars secured to the ladder, connecting bars mounted to swing on the retaining bars, railings pivotally engaging the connecting bars, supporting bars pivotally engaging the railings intermediate the connecting bars, and lugs secured to the supporting bars and adapted to engage the notches of the retaining bars to adjustably secure the railings relative to the retaining bars.
4. A ladder attachment, comprising retaining bars rigidly mounted on the ladder In testimony whereof I have signed my and provided With a plurality of notches, name to this specification in the presence of 10 railings mounted to swing on the retaining two subscribing Witnesses.
bars supportin bars for disposal in the notches of the 1 etaining bars to adjustably EDWARD support the railings, and the said railings being adapted to move parallel to the said retaining bars. A
Witnesses IRA H. CHURCH, ERNESTO PASSENHOFF.
