WILLIAM M. TAYLOR, OF IVESTON, AND \VALTER HOLLE, OF ST. CLARA, IV EST VIRGINIA.
DOOR ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,942, dated May 3, 1904. Application filed February 19, 1904. Serial No. 194,318. \No model.)
To (01] u /m'nt if ITIJLZ/ concern.-
Be it known that we, IVILLIAM M. TAYLOR, of \Veston, county of Lewis, and \VALTEE Home, of St. Clara, county of Doddridge,
State of \Vest Virginia, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Attachments; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
IO such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to door attachments; and it consists of certain novel features of combination and construction of parts, the
I5 preferred form whereof will be hereinafter clearly set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
The prime object of our invention, among others, is to provide a door attachment which while primarily designed for the purpose of a door-check in holding the door in an adjusted position either open or partially open will also be found desirable and useful for a variety of other purposes, as will be hereinafter clearly set forth.
A further object of our invention is to provide a door attachment of the character specilied which will also serve the purpose of holding a door in a proper position ready to have the hinges attached thereto.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, and in which* Figure I shows a perspective view of a door with our invention applied to use thereon and disposed in a locked position, so as to hold the door partially open. Fig. 2 is an elevation of our door-check attachment disposed in a locked 4 position. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing our attachment disposed in an unlocked position, while Fig. 4: is a sectional view of Fig.
2, taken on line 4 A.
The various details and cooperating accessories of our invention will for convenience be designated by numerals, the same numeral applying to a corresponding part throughout the several views, and, referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates a door of the usual or any preferred construction which, as will be 5 seen by reference to the drawings, is in a partially-open position. To one side of the door, near the lower free edge thereof, we secure in any preferred way the body portion or platesection 2 of our attachment, which 55 may be made any desired thickness and of any preferred material and is preferably provided at its lower end with the angular extension or lip 3, designed to fit under the lower edge of the door.
Upon the outer side of the plate or body portion 2 we attach or integrally form therewith the brackets e and 5, provided with suitable openings in which is adapted to longitudinally move the locking-bolt 6, which may 5 be formed in any preferred way and is preferably provided at its lower end with the enlarged terminal or foot 7, adapted to bear directly upon the floor, or a covering of some cushioning substance, as rubber or the like, 7 may be attached to the lower face thereof, said cushioning substance being indicated by the numeral 8 in the drawings. It will be understood that in some instances the lower face of the foot may be provided with a frictional point or points designed to take into the floor.
It will be understood that the body portion or plateZ is provided with a plurality of suitably-located apertures, as indicated by the numeral 9, through which anchoring-screws 8O 10 of suitable character may be entered into the door, thereby reliably locking the plate in an adjusted position upon the door.
If deemed desirable, the inner face of the plate 2 may be covered with felt or other sub- 8 5 stance which will prevent the door from becoming marred in cases where the attachment is not left permanently in position thereon.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that when-the bolt 6 is forced downward 9 the foot-section thereof will be pressed tightly against acontiguous part of the floo r,and thereby hold the door in any position in which it has been adjusted, and in order to provide reliably-efiicient means for controlling the position of the locking-bolt 6 we call attention to our cam-controller, consisting of the main or body section 11, having a controlling-handle 12, a suitable eccentrically-disposed aperture being formed in the body portion 11 to receive the rivet or bolt 13.
It will be observed that the body portion 11 is provided upon its outer edge with a raised rib or outwardly-directed flange 14:, and we utilize this rib or flange to raise and lower the locking-bolt 6, inasmuch as by reference to Fig. A of the drawings it will be observed that said flange 14 is designed to fit within a recess 15, formed in the inner edge of said bolt near the extreme upper end thereof, and it therefore follows that by properly operating the controlling-handle 12 the bolt 6 may be caused to raise or lower at the will of the operator, and thus be disposed in a locked or an unlocked position. It will be observed that by reason of the eccentrically-located aperture for the rivet 13 the flange 1A is quite near said rivet at one point and farther removed upon the opposite side of the body-section 11, and the relative distance of the flange from the pivot-point determines the scope of the movement of the locking-bolt 6.
In Fig. 2 the controlling-handle has been thrown outward the same as illustrated in Fig. 1, and the result is that the bolt 6 has been forced downward in engagement with the floor,
' thereby securely holding the door in an adjust ed position, either entirely open or partially open, as desired.
Our attachment will also be found useful as a door-jack for holding a door lifted to the proper height readyv for the carpenter to attach the hinges thereto, thus rendering it unnecessary for the door to be wedged into the desired position, as is commonly done. Our attachment will therefore be valuable and useful as a carpenters tool, and to prevent the door from slipping we prefer to provide an upwardly-directed point or points for the angular extension 3, said points being indicated by the numeral 15 in Fig. at, and are designed to take into the lower edge of the door and prevent it from casually slipping off.
In some instances the periphery of the body portion 14 may be slightly corrugated, as indicated by the numeral 16 in Fig. 3, said corrugations extending throughout the entire peripheryor only partially, as shown, whereby said body portion will be prevented from casually slipping out of an adjusted position.
It will thus be seen that we have provided a reliably-efficient form of attachment for doors and that the parts thereof may be very cheaply and expeditiously manufactured and each assembled in its respective operative position, and that we have dispensed with the necessity of employing an unnecessary number of partsas, for instance, a spring commonly relied upon to hold the bolt 6 normally upward.
WVhile we have described the preferred combination and construction of parts deemed necessary in carrying out our invention, we wish to comprehend in this application all such substantial equivalents and substitutes as may be'considered as falling fairly within the scope of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described door attachment, comprising a body portion or plate-section 2 having an angular extension 3 and frictional points thereon; suitable brackets land 5 upon the outer side of said plate; a bolt passing.
through apertures in said brackets and having its lower end provided with means to frictionally engage the floor and a cam-controller comprising the body-section 11 having a flange l4 fitting a recess in the upper end of the bolt, said cam-body also having a controlling-handle whereby the bolt may be moved upward and downward as desired, all substan tially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM M. TAYLOR. WALTER HOLLE.
