To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I DANIEL FERRITTO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Table-Leg Levelers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a device for increasing or decreasing the length of a table leg for the purpose of leveling a table and causing it to stand firmly upon the floor.

It frequently happens that the floor upon which a table is set, possesses inequalities which prevent the table from standing firmly or cause it to be out of level.

The object of my invention is to provide a device of simple and efficient construction whereby a table may be caused to sit firmly and perfectly level notwithstanding such inequalities in the floor upon which it is set.

The numeral 1 indicates the leg of a table; the same may be of any shape and construction, in Figs. 1 and 2 an ordinary square table leg being shown and in Fig. 3 one of the legs of a pedestal table of ordinary construction. Secured vertically in the lower end of the table leg 1 is a metal bushing or sleeve 2. The said bushing is open at the bottom and is adapted to receive a plunger 3 on the lower end of which is rigidly secured a foot plate 4. Along one side of the plunger 3 are notches 5 for the purpose hereinafter set forth. In the bushing 2 is an opening 6. Secured to the side of the table leg is a plate 7. The said plate has an opening 8 which communicates through a recess in the table leg with the opening 6 in the bushing. Secured to the plate 7, or integrally formed therewith is a lug 9 which extends inside the recess in the table leg. Pivotally mounted on the lug 9 is a pawl 10 adapted to engage the notches 5 on the plunger 3. The said pawl is provided with an operating button 11 extending outside of the table leg. The spring 12 mounted on the lug 9 bears against the extension 13 of the pawl 10 normally to hold the same in engagement with the notches on the plunger.

The foot plate 4 has a circular boss 14 to provide a suitable footing and one which is adapted to slide conveniently upon a floor or floor covering. The said foot plate is also provided with lugs or ears 15 which extend laterally beyond the table leg as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

Threaded in the upper end of the plunger 3 is a bolt 16 provided with a slotted head 17 Inside the bushing 2, just above the upper end of the plunger 3 is a shoulder 18. Interposed between thev shoulder 18 and the head 17 of bolt 16 is a spring 19 which normally holds the plunger 3 in raised position; that is, in position where the foot plate 4 rests against the bottom of the table leg.

From the foregoing description, the nature and use of my invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the same appertains. Ordinarily a table should be provided with but two of the levelers as shown, for instance in Fig. 4 of the drawing, these providing amply to take care of any inequalities in a floor. When it is desired to lengthen one of the legs in order to cause the table to stand firmly and level, the operators foot or feet are placed upon one or both of the lugs 15, thus fixing the foot plate to the floor and the table may then be lifted until the desired result is obtained, the spring 19 being thereby placed in tension. In order to shorten the leg thus lengthened, it is only necessary to press inwardly the button 11, the spring 19 operating to raise the plunger and foot plate 4.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
