AWNING-FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. January 14, 1909.
Patented J une 7, 1910.
Serial No. 472,239.
To all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. O. As'r- RUP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awning-Fixtures, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in awning-fixtures and, more particularly, to awning-brackets adapted to carry the awning-rod at the upper or stationary edge of the awning together with the necessary pulley-blocks in the equipment.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a generally improved fixture of this class which will be exceedingly simple in construction, cheap of manufacture and eficient in use.
Another object is to provide a nutless fixture of this class in which the various parts when assembled are so secured and ar ranged that they cannot become loose or disarranged and when the fixture is mounted it may remain from year to year without the liability of rust interfering with the free and proper working of the curtain-rod clamping and fastening devices, said clamping and fastening devices being also designed to be operated without the use of a wrench or other tool now required in connection with xtures now in use employing nuts or similar mechanical expedients in their construction.
A further object is to provide a universal fixture, that is,-one which may be attached to horizontal or overhanging walls, as for example, an offset horizontal ledge of a porch or window as well as to vertical walls or facings of similar structures.
With the above mentioned obj ects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings showing one of the embodiments of the invention, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specication, Figure 1, is a perspective view of an ordinary window-awning equipped with my improved fixture. Fig. 2, a plan view of one of the members or brackets of the improved fixture in its operative position as applied to the awning-rod contained in the upper or stationary edge of the awning. Fig. 3, a central vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 4, a side elevation of the threaded boss portion of the improved fixture, together with attached interlocking rod-clamping member, and thumb screw for drawing said clamping member into clamping engagement with the awning rod.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved awning fixture is designed for the securing and supporting of the upper or stationary awning -rod containing edge of an awning, together with the necessary pulley-blocks in the equipment, and, when applied to an ordinary window-awning may comprise two members or brackets suitably secured to the window frame as indicated in Fig. l, of the drawings. Each member or bracket comprises a base or wallplate 1, provided with one or more forwardly-extending depending hooks 2. lThe wall-plate l, provided with openings 3, for receiving and containing suitable attaching screws faor the attachment of the fixture to vertical walls or facings of a window or similar structure as illustrated in Fig. 1, terminates at its upper edge in an overhanging bracket member 4, preferably, provided with attaching ears 4a, having screw openings 5. The overhanging bracket member 4, enables the fixture to be attached to an oifset horizontal ledge of a porch or window where no convenient vertical wall or facing is conveniently located for the purpose.
The base or wall plate l, is provided with a threaded boss 6, terminating at its rear in an enlarged opening 6, at the rear of said wall plate. A thumb-screw 7 is mounted in the threaded opening of the boss, and when threaded therein in the act of assembling has its inner end upset or overturned forming an enlarged head or retaining stop 8, within the enlarged opening 6a, and adapted to limit the outward or unscrewing movement of the thumb screw and thus prevent its loss by removal when the parts are assembled. The thumb screw is preferably formed of brass so as to guard against any liability of its rusting in the threaded boss and the head of said thumb screw comprises an annular ianged shoulder portion 9, and an annular enlarged knurled head portion 10.
A depending rod-retaining clamping member 11, is mounted on the boss 6, and is provided with an opening l2, adapted to receive and contain the thumb screw 7, when the parts are assembled. As a means for preventing the lateral movement of the clamping member when the parts are in their clamping position as shown in the drawings, the rear side of the head of the clamping member is provided with a retaining rib 13, adapted to normally interlock with a pocket-groove 14, on the face of the boss 6. The depending portion of the clamping member extends downwardly above and in front of the nose portions of the depending i hooks 2, and is preferably provided with a rearwardly-extending hooked portion 11, provided at its rear with a concave recess 11b, adapted to receive and contain the awning rod 15, when the latter is clamped by the improved fixture as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, of the drawings.
' The throats of the depending hooks 2, are adapted to receive and contain the eyes 16, of the pulley blocks 17 and the members or brackets of the improved fixture when mounted are adapted to remain from season to season.
By the construction shown and described it is obvious that the parts will remain assembled and when it is desired to place an awning in position the loosening off the thumb screw 7 will permit the depending clamping member 11, to be swung to one side and the awning rod, together with the awning carried thereby, may be placed in position beneath the boss 6, and upon the nose portions of the depending hooks 2. The clamping member 11, may then be turned down into its normal or clamping engagement with the front portion of the awning rod and the surrounding upper or stationary edge of the awning after which the thumb screw may be drawn up to securely clamp the parts in their proper operative position as shown in the drawings.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
1. In an awning-fixture, a wall-plate having an overhanging bracket member and provided with a boss having its threaded opening terminating in an enlarged opening at the rear of said wall-plate, said wallplate having a pulley-hook having its nose extending forwardly and beneath the horizontal plane of said boss.
