Description

(No Model.)
J.M. DOUNS. TRBSTLE AND VSCAHOLDl No, 249,508. iylagfmted Nov. 15,1881.
JJVVENTOR j UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
JOHN M. DOUNS,'OF LEAVENWORTH, KANSAS.
TRESTLE AND SCAFFOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. DoUNs,of Leaveuwort-h,in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trestles and Scaffolds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention which will enable oth ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accomvpanying drawings', which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved trestles or` scaii'olds complete. Fig.` 2 is a perspective view of one of the end or main sockets. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the legs of the trestle; and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
Corresponding parts in the` several figures are denoted by likeletters of reference.
This invention relates to trestles or scaffolds for the use of painters, carpenters, brick-layers, and other artisans and it n consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same by which the scaii'olding may be easily and quickly erected or taken ldown without Waste or injury to the material and in a safe and satisfactory manner, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed outin the claims. .t
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents one of the main sockets or braces of my improved scaffold. The saidv socket consists of a strong square sleeve or band, B, to the upper corners of which are hinged straps C,
provided at their lower ends with sockets D `for the legs of thetrestle. At its lower end the socket A is provided with a segmental rack, E, extending through slots F inthe straps C, which are provided with latches Gr, engaging said rack in order tol retain the said legstraps 'firmly in any position to which they may be adj usted or extended. The sleeves or bands A, of which two are to be used, are ad- 4 5 justed upon the ends of the horizontal top bar, H, and legs I are set into the sockets D, as
, shown in Fig. 1, said legs being of such length as to make the trestle of the proper or desired height. Upon the lower ends of the legs are i 5o placed sleeves J, havingswiveled hooks K to part of Letters Patent, No. 249,508, dated November 15, 1881. Application nien september e, 1851. (No model.)
receive, and hold the transverse braces L, by which the legs are prevented from spreading.
M is a sleeve or band adjusted about centrally upon the top bar, H, and having lateral brackets N, provided with bauds or collars O, in which a pair of vertical legs, P, may be adjusted and secured by transverse pins or keys. These legs, however, are not absolutely necessary, and may be dispensed with unless thev trestle is very large or designed to support an unusually heavy weight.
In practice a pair of my improved trestles may be used to support the planks which form the platform for the workmen and their material 5 but for convenience in moving the scaf folding when this has to be frequently done, and when light work--such as painting-is to be executed, I have devised the brackets Q,
which consist of sleeves R adjustable upon the top bar, H, and having cross-bars S strengthened by braces T, and carrying sleeves U, iu which cross-bars V are adjusted to support the planks W. By this arrangement a single trestle is sufficient in many cases where at least two have been heretofore required.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, convenient, and will be found to save considerable time, labor, and material for artisans who from the nature of their pursuits are compelled frequently to erect scaffolding.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States;-
1. A brace or socket for `trestles consisting of a band or sleeve having hinged straps pro `vided with leg-sockets and latches, and a rackbar to be engaged by said latches and secured to the lower side of the said baud or sleeve, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2 The combination of the horizontal crossbar H, the braces A, having hinged straps C, provided with sockets 1), the legs I, the sleeves J, having swiveled hooks K, and the braces L, substantially as and for the purpose shown and specified.
3. 'Ihecombinatioiuwith a trestle construct- IOO stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The herein-described improved trestle or scaffold, consisting, essentially, of the sockets A, legs I, cross-bar H, sleeves J, having swiveled hooks K, braces L, and the uprights P and cross-bars V, adjusted in suitable sleeves, substantially as and for the purpose herein 15 shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. DOUNS.
Witnesses: JOHN O. BROWN,
HENRY WULF.
