Description
L. A. SLEEPER.
Scaffolds.
No.l52,955. Patentedlulymnam.
NRA/@ases U NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI A. SLEEPER, OF POULTNEY, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT -|N SCFFOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 152,955, dated July 14, 1874; application tiled May 8, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEVI A'. SLEEPER, of Poultney, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Uprights for Plasterers and Builders Stagings, ot' Which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an isometrical perspective view of my improved upright; and Figs. 2 and 3 details to be referred to.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts in the diiferent figures of the drawing.
My invention relates more especially to that class of staging-posts or uprights which are extensible; and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinaf( er more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more convenient and effective device of this character' is produced than is now in common use.
It is well known to all practical plasterers and builders that a great Waste ot material occurs, and much time and labor are spent in erecting and removing stagin gs, and in changing the height of the platform, as ordinarily constructed, on account of nailing the horizontal supports to the uprights. My invention is designed to obviate these difliculties and objections 5 and to this end I employ an extensible upright having adjustable brackets, and provided with folding legs or braces,
enabling a staging to be erected or removed with great facility, and without the destruction of material.
In Fig. 1, A is the post or body ot' the np right; B B, the braces or legs 5 (l D, hooks and eyes for holding the braces in position when the upright is in use; F, the bracket having the arms H H, and which is centrally mortised or fitted to slide freely on the body A, being retained in any desired position by the serrated rack P, and gravitating-pawls G G; the pawls being pivoted in the bracket and provided with the rachet-teeth N N, Fig. 3. The upright is rendered extensible by the removable section E, which has a rack like the body A, and is 4provided with the side plates I I, fitting in the sockets K, and also with a centrally-disposed doWel or pin, L, fitting the socket M, Fig. 2, for this purpose.
From the foregoing the nature and operation of my invention Will be readily -understood by all conversant with such matters.
To erect a staging for frescoing, plasterin g, Snc., as many ofthe uprights as are necessary to sustain the platform are disposed about the room, the brackets F being adjusted at the required height. The girders or cross-beams are then placed upon the bracket-arms, and the platform being supported upon the crossbeams in a manner which will be readily nnderstood without a more explicit description. It will be obvious that any number of the sections E may be used to lengthen the upright, each section boing provided, at its lower end, with plates I l, and at its upper end With sockets K, for that purpose. Vhen the upright is not in use the brackets F may be removed, and the braces BB folded against the body A, as shown by the dotted lines a a, Fig l.
Having thus explained my improvement, what I claim isrEhe staging-upright described, consisting LEVI ALMON SLEEPER.
