UNITED STATES JACOB II. FOSTER, OF RISING CITY, NEBRASKA.
lRONlNG-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,158, dated November 10, 1896. Application filed August 27, 1896. Serial No. 604,087. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB H. FOSTER, a citizen of -the United States of America, residing at Rising City, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and
to letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ironing-tables; and it consists in the special construction and combination of the parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal. sectional View of an ironing-table "constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an inverted folded against the plan view with the legs table-top. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
A designates the top of the ironing-table,
- to the under side of which are attached transverse blocks a and 01., the latter carrying a turn-button a for the purpose hereinafter mentioned. At an intermediate point the under side of the table-top is provided with two parallel longitudinal angle strips or rails 19 b, at the'ends of which are located transverse pieces b, forming stops. The strips or rails b I) retain in place a sliding block B, having side flanges which fit into the grooves or guides formed by said rails in conjunction with the table-top. The sliding block is provided with an aperture which receives a pin 0, adapted to engage a series of notches or recesses a in the table-top to hold said sliding block in an adjusted position, said p'in being thrown in engagement with the notches by a spring-arm 0, let into a longitudinal recess in the under side of the block. The outer side of the block projects beyond the guide rails b, and is provided with a transverse groove b adjoining which is a turn-button (Z, either end of which can, be turned to overlie the groove, for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
PATENT OFFIC E E designate a pair of legs which are piv-' oted at their upper ends to the block a and are connected to each other near their lower ends by a cross-bar c, and to an intermediate portion of these legs is pivoted a second pair of legs F F, which are connected at their ends by cross-bars f f, and are further braced by diagonal strips f.
In operation, when the legs of the ironingtable are extended, as shown in Fig. 1, the upper cross-bar f of the legs F is caused to engage the. transverse groove b of the sliding block B, and the turn-button d is turned to hold the said cross-bar in such engagement. The spring-actuated pin 0 is then retracted to permit the block to be slid to secure a proper adjustment of the table-top as to height, after which the pin is released to engage the proper notch or recess in said tabletop, thereby providing a rigid support or table.- hen the table is not in use, the legs F can be released from engagement with the block and then folded within the longer legs E, and by swinging said legs against the under side of the table-top and causing the turnbutton a to engage the cross-bar e the parts will be assembled, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, to occupy a minimum amount of space. 1
An ironing table constructed as herein shown and described can be readily adjusted to position, the top at the proper height, and when the adjustment has been made a very rigid structure will be provided that will well adapt it for the purposes intended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 0 1. The combination in an ironing-table, of parallel guide-rails secured to the underside of the top, a block in sliding engagement with said guide-rails, said block projecting beyond the guide-rails and provided with a trans- 5 verse groove with a turn-button adjoining the same, a spring-actuated pin carried by the block and adapted to engage a series of notches or recesses to hold said block in an adjusted position; together with two sets of pivoted legs one set having a cross-bar adapted to engage the groove and turn-button of the sliding block, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in an ironing-table, of the longitudinal guide-rails b b and blocks a co secured to the under side of the top, the block a carrying a turn-button a a block B in sliding engagement with the guide-rails provided with a transverse groove and turnbutton adjoining the same; a spring-actuated pin let into the block and adapted to engage a series of notches or recesses in the under side of the table-top to hold said block in an adjusted position; together with a pair of legs pivoted at their upper ends to the block a and provided at their lower ends with a cross
