LYNN KING, OF LYMAN, MISSISSIPPI.
COMBINED STEP-LADDER ANI) IRO NING-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
Application filed February 3, 1909. Serial No. 475,873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYNN KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyman, in the county of Harrison and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Step-Ladders and Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a combined step ladder and ironing board.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character which shall be simple and durable of construction, which may be readily and quickly erected in condition for use as a step ladder or for use as an ironing board, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined step ladder and ironing board constructed in accordance with my invention, the device being shown erected in condition for use as a step. ladder. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the combined step ladder and ironing board, the same being shown erected in condition for use as an ironing board, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the combined step ladder and ironing board as shown in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 1 designates the side rails, 2 the steps, and 3 the prop of a step ladder constructed in accordance with my invention. The prop 3 comprises a body portion 4: which is in the form of an ironing board, a pair of attaching members 5 and a pair of supporting members 6. The attaching members 5 are secured at their inner ends to the under side of the body 4, and are pivotally secured at their upper ends to the sides 1 by means of a bolt 7, the upper ends of the members projecting beyond the upper end of the body. The upper ends of the members 6 are secured to the under side of the body 4, their lower ends projecting below the lower end of the 'body, the lower free ends of the members being held against relative movements by means of a round 8. Those ends of the members 5 and 6 which are secured to the body 4 are provided with enlargements 9 which space the body from the members whereby to enable an article of clothing to he slipped over either end of the body when using the device as an ironing board.
WVhen the device is used as a step ladder the prop 3 is held in proper relation to the sides 1 by means of braces which comprise members 10 pivotally secured to the side edges of the body 4 and members 11 pivotally secured to the sides 1. The members 10 and 11 of the braces are pivotally secured together as at 12. One member of each brace is provided with an integrally formed hook 13 adapted to fit in a recess 14 formed in the upper edge of the other member, said hook being adapted to secure the members in bracing relation against accidental movement.
When the device is used as an ironing board the same is supported in a horizontal position by legs 15, the body 4 being supported by the members 5 and 6 which rest upon the rear edges of the steps 2, see Fig. 2 of the drawings. The legs 15 are pivotally secured to the sides 1 and are secured in supporting position by means of braces 16. The braces 16 are pivotally secured to the legs 15 as at- 17, and have a pin and slot connection with the sides 1, the slots 18 being formed in the braces and the pins 19 being carried by blocks 20 which are secured to the sides 1. The slots 18 communicate with ofiset seats 21 which are'occupied by the pins 19 when the braces are in active position, the connection between the pins and the seats being such as to prevent the legs 15 from being accidentally turned upon their pivots.
It should be apparent from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that I provide a combination article which may be readily and quickly erected for use as a step ladder or as an ironing board, one which is simple, durable and eflicient, and one which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
While I have described the method of operation of the invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is merely illustrative, and. that such changes may be made whend esired as are within the scope of the claim.
Having thus described the. inventiomwhat. is claimed as new is A combination article comprising sides, steps secured to the sides, a body in the form of an ironingboard, attaching members secured to the body and pivotally secured to 10 the sides, supporting memberssecured to the body, all of the members being spaced from the body for portions of their lengths, braces secured to the body and the sides, legs pivotbraces secured X my signature LYNN KING.
Vitnesses W. L. Fox, FERMAN LADNIER.
