HARRY B. HALEY, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINATION STEP-LADDER AND IRONlNG-BOARD.
Application filed I 6111mm 1905- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Nov. 20, 1906.
Serial No. 240.402.
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. HALEY, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination Step-Ladders and Ironing-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a combined stepladder and ironing-board-that is, an article which in one of its operative positions can be used as a step-ladder and in its other such position is capable of being employed as an ironing-board.
The objects of the invention are to provide a combined step-ladder and ironing-board which is extremely simple in construction and operation, strong and durable, and of comparatively small cost, and which may be conveniently folded into a compact form and carried and placed in position for either of its uses by women.
I will now describe my invention, so that others skilled in the art may manufacture and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement when in position for use as a step-ladder. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device when in position for use asan ironing-board. Fig. iis a top view of the device as shown in Fig. 3, broken away.
Like symbols of reference indicate like parts in each.
In the drawings, 1 represents the ladder frame, to the upper portion of which is hinged at 2 the member 3, which forms in one position the support for the ladder and in the other position the ironing-board. The ladder-frame 1 is provided with steps 4, braced by the brackets 5. To the side rails 6 6 of the ladder are pivoted the bars 7 7, which form a su port for the member 3 when in the position i lustrated in Fig. 3.
28 is a strip connected to the bars 7 for bracing the same.
9 is the top stepof the ladder, supported by the cross-bar 10.
The end of the member 3 is slotted, as at 11, and pivoted, by means of the pivot 12, to said member. Within these slots are the bars 12, which on their upper edges support a platform composed of a rigid part 14 and a hinged portion 15 for holding a bucket or other article when the device is used as a step-ladder, and on their lower edges suport a metallic platform 16, forming a rest for the iron when the device is in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, the hinged portion 15 be ing provided, so that when the device is used as an ironing-board it will drop or depend vertically and afford clearance for the step at the top of the ladder portion, as shown in Fig.3.
17 represents hooks connected to the ends of the bars 12, which hooks are adapted to enter slots 19 and engage pins 18 in the side rails 6 6 of the ladder-frame, whereby a brace or stay is provided between the ladder-frame and its support 3 when in the position shown in Fig. 1.
8 is a cross-bar connected to the upper ends of the bars 7 and adapted to engage a rack 20, mounted upon the under side of the member 3, as indicated in Fig. 3. I
My improvement is shown in Fig. 1 adapt ed for use as a step-ladder having a platform for supporting a bucket or other article.
When desiring to employ the device as an ironing-board, the hooks 17 are disengaged from the pins 18 and slots 19, the bars 12 are turned over, bringing the iron-rest 16 uppermost, and the legs 6 7 are placed in the position shown in Fig. 3, the cross-bar 8 taking into the rack 20 of the member 3, the upper surface of which now constitutes an ironingboard with the support 16 at one end for the iron when the same is not in use.
I claim A combination step-ladder and ironing board, comprising androning-board, a ladder hingedto one end thereof, bars pivoted to the opposite sides of said ladder and adapted at one end to engage the ironing-board at its free end, and a member pivoted to the ironing-board and adapted to engage the ladder at one end and form a platform when the device is to be used as a step-ladder and to be disengaged from the ladder and reversed to In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY B. HALEY.
