UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALVIN A. FRANCIS, OF MARCUS, WASHINGTON.
COMBINED IRONING-BOARD, STEP-LADDER, AND CLOTHES-RACK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN A. FRANoIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marcus, in the county of Stevens, State of \Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Ironing Boards, Step-Ladders, and Clothes-Racks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combined step ladders, ironing boards, and clothes racks, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device of this character which may be erected in any desired locality, and employed without material structural changes as an ironing table, a step ladder, or a clothes rack.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and de scribed and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device arranged as an ironing board and clothes rack. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved device arranged as a step ladder. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing one means of employing the improved device. Fig. A is a similar view illustrating another manner for employing the improved device.
The improved device comprises a step ladder including spaced sides 1011, a head step 12 and a plurality of intermediate spaced steps 13, these parts being of the usual form, except that the intermediate step nearest to the head step is wanting. Pivoted at 14 between the sides 1011 and at the point where the upper step would occur in an ordinary step ladder, is an ironing board 15 of the usual form. The board 15 is provided with a transverse cleat 16 at r the point where the pivot 14: is located, and thus utilized to receive the pivot, and materially increase the strength of the board at its pivotal point. Pivoted at 1718 between the sides 1011 adjacent to the head Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 13, 1909.
Patented Aug. 30, 1910. Serial No. 532,844.
step 12 are two bars 1920, the free ends of the bars being coupled by a transverse member 21. Pivoted at 2223 upon the transverse member 21 are two bars 24l25, these latter bars being foldalole over the member 21 when not in use, and adapted to be employed for supporting the ironed garments when the device is employed as an ironing table. The members 212425 thus constitute an effectual clothes rack attachment to the device. The members 192O also perform another important function, as shown in Fig. 4, wherein they are utilized to maintain the board 15 in a horizontal position without the necessity for the shorter end of the board being inserted beneath the table top, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. By this arrangement it will be obvious that the improved device may be supported at one end upon a table or upon a window stool, or other support, which may be so constructed as to preclude the necessity for the means of attachment as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
Thus the improved device may be located at any point, and without the necessity for depending upon a specific height or form of table top, window stool, or the like. The improved device is simple in construction, may be inexpensively manufactured, and of any required size or capacity, and may be folded into a relatively small space when not in use.
WVhat is claimed is The combination of a stepladder including spaced sides, a head step and a plurality of spaced intermediate steps, an ironing board extending atone end between the side members and pivoted therebetween adjacent to the head step, and a clothes rack device including spaced sides swinging at one end between the side members near the head step and in position to engage the edge of the top step to be supported thereby in a nearly vertical position.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ALVIN A. FRANCIS.
