Description

E. & E. BIYOUNG 8 F. E.H1AFELY. Book-Holders.
No. 204,872- Patented Jun e1LI878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EDWIN YOUNG, EDWARD R. YOUNG, AND FREDERICK E. HAFELY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORS TO POTT, YOUNG 8t 00., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,872, dated June 11, 1878; application filed May 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWIN YOUNG, ED- WARD R. YOUNG, and FREDERICK E. HAFELY, all of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book-Holders, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a transverse section in the plane w m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modification thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the combination, in a book-holder, of two cheeks united by a flexible back, two pockets, one on the inside of each cheek, a flap or strap, and a clasp for closing the holder, and a handle for carrying the same when closed, so that two books can be conveniently carried in said holder, and when the holder is opened both books are retained in position, and either book can be used conveniently without danger of dropping the other.
In the drawing, the letter A designates our holder, which is composed of two checks, (0 b, united by a flexible back, 0. Said cheeks are made of leather, or any other suitable rigid or flexible material, and the back is, by preference, made of leather, muslin, paper, or other flexible material.
In practice, the cheeks and the back are made of one continuous piece of leather, and on the inside ofeach cheek is formed a pocket, d, large enough to receive one side of the cover 0 of one of the books to be carried in the holder. Each holder is intended for two books-such, for instance, as a prayer-book and a hymnloook, ora prayer-book and a New Testament or a Bible-both books being made as near as possible of the same size.
To the cheek b is secured a strap or flap, f, which can be fastened to the cheek a by a suitable clasp, g. A handle, h, serves to carry the holder with its contents when the same is closed.
In the example shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the closin g-flap f is made in the form of a strap, with which the handle h is combined; but in the example shown in Fig. 3 the closing-flap extends over the entire length of the holder, and the handle is secured to the same in any suitable manner.
When the holder is opened each of the books in the same is retained in position by the appropriate pocket, and either of the books can be conveniently opened and used without danger of dropping the other. Y
Our holder is intended, particularly, for people visiting their places of worship, and it serves materially to preserve the books used during worship, while it allows of using said books with convenience.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a book-holder, of two cheeks united by a flexible back, two pockets, one on the inside of each cheek, and adapted to receive one side oi the cover of a book, a flap or strap, and a clasp for closing the holder, and a handle for carrying the same, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 8th day of May, 1878.
