Description
(No Model) F. G. LANE. CAPE PoR GOSSAMERS.
Patented July' 13,1897.
. INVENTOR Maf/Q ODOWL QWMMW STATES FREDERICK G. LANE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAPE FOR GOSSAIVERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 586,132, dated July 13, 1897.
Application led October '7, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK G. LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Capes for Gossamers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in capes for gossamers, the invention being designed particularly'to provide means whereby a gossamer may be conveniently carried in dry weather and means whereby it may be readily brought into use when desired.
The invention consists of a gossamer-cape provided with draw-strings in its upper and lower edges and with hooks and eyes or other fastening devices along the side edges thereof, said cape being adapted to be drawn into bag form for containing the gossamerin folded condition and for holding the lunclrbag or other articles designed to be carried therein.
The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l represents a perspective view of my device in its closed form. Fig. 2 is a similar4 view of the same, showing it in its open form. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the cape detached.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views. I
The cape lis provided with draw-strings 2 at its upper edge7 by means of which said cape may be closed or thrown into open position, as desired. The side edges of said cape are provided with hooks and eyes 3 3 or other suitable fastening devices. The draw-strings 2 move-'in suitable ways 4, and adjacent to the lower edge of the cape l are like 'drawstrings 5, similar to the strings 2, which are adapted to hold the gossamer 6 on the inside of the cape when it is in its bag form. The said capeis adapted to be thrown into bag form by connecting the hooks and eyes 3 3 and drawing together the drawi Serial No. 608,088. (No model.)
strings. At a point adjacent to the way 4. is an eye 7, into which a hook 8 upon the upper edge of the gossamer G is adapted to be inserted when the gossamer is in its open position.
In using my device the cape l is thrown into its bag form by connecting together the hooks and eyes 3 3, and the gossamer is folded up and fastened to the inside of said bag by means of the" cord or string 5. The upper end of the bag is closed by drawing on the drawestrings 2 This is the normal position of the parts.
The gossamer 6 occupies a very small space upon the inside of the cape 1 when the latter is in its bag form. The said bag is adapted to hold a ladys lunch or other small articles which she maydesire to carry.4 In case a sudden shower should come up the cape l may be opened by detaching the hooks and eyes 3 3 from one another, and the gossamer 6 may be removed by untying the strings 5. Said gossamer is then used in the ordinary manner, with the cape l in its open position, as shown in Fig. 2, the said cape being attached to the upper end of the gossamer 6 by means of the hook and eye S and?, respectively.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. A cape for gossamers, provided with fastening means along the side edges and with draw-strings at the upper and lower ends thereof, whereby the same may be converted into bag form for containing the gossamer in its folded condition, substantially as described.
' 2. A cape for gossamers made of waterproof material having fastening devices along the side edges thereof, whereby the same may be converted into bag form, draw-strings at the upper and lower edges thereof,`and means at the upper edge of the cape for securing the same to a gossamer, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK G. LANE. lVitnesses:
VICTOR FREEMAN, S. C. KRAUs.
