Description
H. H. FREEMAN.
HAT HOLDER.
(No'ModeL) No. 582,912. Patented May 18, 1897.
UNITED STATES FFICE ATENT HAT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,912, dated May 18, 1897.
Application filed February 3, 1897. Serial No. 621,793. (No model.)
2" 0 all whom, it warty concern.-
Be it known that I, HERBERT H. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pierre, in the county of Hughes and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Holders; and I do declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in hat-hangers; and the object is to provide a simple and convenient device to be carried in the pocket and which may be removably secured to a hat to suspend the same from a peg 0r hook.
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more "fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan View, partly in section, of my improved hat-hanger. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, showing the clasp open; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the clasp closed in position for carrying it in the pocket.
1 represents a ring formed with shoulders 2 2, connected by a fiat bar 3.
4 represents a spring-clasp formed with semicircular jaws 5 5 and recesses 6 6, arranged opposite to each other in the shank portion of the clasp. These recesses 6 6 reoeive the bar 3 on the ring 1, and when the clasp is turned at an angle to the ring, as shown in Fig. 2, the bar forces the jaws of the clasp open, so that the rim of the hatmay be inserted between the jaws. The ring is then turned outwardly, so as to lie in the same plane as the clasp, which position allows the jaws to close on the hat-rim, which may then be suspended from any convenient nail, peg, or hook.
In removing the hat from its support the ring is first turned ata right angle to the clasp, which opens the jaws and releases the hat. The clasp is then folded in the ring, as shown in Fig. 3, which renders the whole device. compact and portable for convenient carriage in the vest-pocket.
The use of my device is not limited to hats, but other articles can be suspended with equal facility, depending only on the size and strength of the parts.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
The ring 1 provided with the shoulders 2 2 and flat bar 3, in combination with the springclasp 4 provided with integral jaws 5 5 and oppositely-disposed recesses 6 6, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT I-I. FREEMAN.
