T0 at whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE PROUTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Edward, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ouspidor-Tongs, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to tongs or similar devices for handling cuspidors and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is also comparatively inexpensive and by means of which a cuspidor or similar vessel may be manipulated or handled or carried from one point to another without applying the hands thereto.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of my improved device for handling or carrying cuspidors, and Fig. 2 a side view showing the method of the operation thereof.

In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of myinvention I provide a circular clamp 5, which consists of a single strip of spring metal bent centrally to form a tubular loop 6, the separate sides thereof being then carried out parallel to form an arm 7 and said sides being then formed into semicircular jaws 8 and the ends thereof being curved outwardly to form projections 9. These projections 9, however, are not absolutely necessary and may or may not be employed, and pivotally connected with the opposite sides of the jaws 8 of the curved clamp 5, as shown at 10, are two curved arms 11, which are pivotally connected at 12 and which are provided with outwardlydirected extensions or handles 13, which are preferably provided at their ends with rings 14.

By operating the handles 13 of the arms 11 or by separating the same the jaws 8 of the curved clamp 5 may also be separated, and in practice the said clamp 5 is caused to grasp the neck of the cuspidor or other article, as shown in Fig. 2, an ordinary cuspidor being shown in dotted lines in said figure. A loop 15 is also connected with the tubular head or loop 6 of the arm 7 and is free to turn therein, and by means of said loop and the extensions 9 of the jaws 8, ifthe latter be employed, the cuspidor may also be handled or manipulated, and said loop 15 may serve as a handle for turning the clamp 5 when the arms 11 are held in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 2.

My improvement is simple in construction and operation and is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended; and it will be apparent that changes inand modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device for carrying, handling or manipulating cuspidors and similar articles, said device consisting of a circular clamp composed of two curved spring-jaws which are brought together at one end to form an arm, and two curved arms which are pivotally connected together, and also pivotally connected with said jaws, said curved arms being provided with projections or handles, substantially as shown and described.

2. A device for the purpose herein specified, consisting of a circular clamp which is open at one side, and two curved arms pivotally connected with the opposite sides of said clamp, said curved arms being also pivotally connected and provided with extensions or handles, substantially as shown and described.

3. In cuspidor-tongs, the combinatiomwith a circular clamp provided with an extension on one side thereof, of a movable handle 95 mounted on said extension, curved arms piv-' otally connected with said clamp and with each other, and extensions or handles on said arms, substantially as and for the purpose described.
