Description

CARRIER Filed July 12, I922 Patented Got. 14, 1924.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. PUTNAM, OF RUTLAND, VERMONT.
CARRIER.
Application filed July 12, 1922. Serial No. 574,581.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. PUTNAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rutland, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a carrier for bottles and the like, the general object of the invention being to provide means for gripping the neck of a bottle by a tonglike arrangement of parts so that there is no danger of the bottle slipping from the device.
Another object of the invention is to so form the parts that the gripping jaws can be moved apart by a simple movement of the fingers of the hand holding the device or they can be moved to grip the. bottle by said fingers.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views. and in which Figure 1 is a view showing the device in use.
Figure 2 is a view showing the device in open position.
Figures 3 and 4- are detail views.
In these views, 1 indicates a handle member, the ends of which are inclined and from which projects the studs 2. These studs may be formed from a single piece of wire or the like which extends entirely through the handle. A pair of members 3 each composed of a handle part. a curved part and a jaw part are pivotally connected together by the pivot pin 4 which passes through flat parts 5 of the members, these flat parts being placed parallel by twisting the material from which the members are formed. The jaw parts 6 are formed of arc-shaped pieces which are secured, intermediate their ends, to the ends of the members. The outer or upper ends of the handle parts of the members are provided with slots 7 which receive the studs 2 so that the handle member is located between the handle parts. As will I;
be seen the device is somewhat on the order of a pair of ice tongs, and will hold a bottle in the same manner as a piece of ice is held by the ice tongs. To open the device the handle is held in the palm of the hand. Then the index finger is placed under the pivotal point of the two members. Then the finger is nearly closed which will draw the hand and the handle therein down, thus spreading the handle parts of the members and moving the jaw parts away from each other, so as to release the bottle. To close the device on a bottle the index finger is doubled over and placed on top of the pivotal point of the two members. Then the finger is straightened as the jaws are being placed over the neck of the bottle. This action will cause the studs in the handle to lift up on the handle parts of the members and thus force the jaw parts together on the bottle. Then the carrying of the device with the bottle therein will act to cause the jaws to firmly grip the bottle, as will be understood.
By this invention a bottle can be easily carried without danger of dropping the same and without tiring one as the hand is held in a natural position and the arms can swing free.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in. the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is A carrier of the class described comprising a pair of members pivotally connected to gether and each consisting of a handle part and a. jaw part, the handle part having a slot in its outer end, and a handle having parts at its ends engaging the slots.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOHN J. PUTNAM.
