CAN LIFTER Filed Sept. 7, 1943 I m'entor Patented Oct. 17, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CAN LIFTER Fred L. Goodwin, Fort Worth, Tex.
Application September 7, 1943, Serial No. 501,473
2 Claims.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in lifters and more particularly to a device for lifting hot cans especially during the process of canning fruits, Vegetables and other commodities.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a simple implement which in operation will be very convenient to use.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be positive acting and substantially fool-proof in operation at all times.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the device.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the spreader.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of one of the jaw elements.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 denotes a transverse handle. The implement employs a pair of legs 6, 1, the leg I having an oblique upper portion 8 which is secured to the mid-portion of the handle 5. Where the oblique portion 8 meets the leg I, the leg is flattened as at 9 and the flattened upper end In of the leg 6 is pivotally secured, as at H thereto.
The legs 6, l have intermediate flattened portions l2, l2 connected by a tension spring I3.
Numeral [4 generally refers to a spreader and this consists of a channeled member I 5 having ears It at one end straddling a flattened portionll of the leg I and thereto pivoted as at IS. The other end of the channeled member I5 rides the leg 6 and is provided with a large finger receiving ring l9.
Obviously, by gripping the handle 5 and pulling upwardly on the ring IS, the legs 6, I can be 5 spread and upon releasement of the ring I9, the
spring I3 will pull the legs together so that jaws 20, 23 carried by the lower ends of the legs will grip the can or other receptacle that is to be lifted. The jaws 2|] are simply broad plates hav- 10 ing beveled flanges 2| thereon.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
'1. A lifter of the character described comprising a handle, a pair of legs, one of said legs being secured to the handle, the other leg being pivotally secured to the handle attached leg, contracting means for the legs, and spreader means for the legs, said spreader consisting of a member having one end pivotally connected to one of the legs and adapted to ride the other leg at its opposite end, and a finger receiving ring for the lastnamed end of the spreader.
