S. J. SOOVIL.
BUCKLE.
No. 348,352. Patented Aug. 31, 1886.
INVENTOR 2 WITNESSES ATT'ORN N PETERS. Pholo-Lllhognpher, wan-" m n4;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL .I. SCOVIL, OF JAMAICA, NEWV YORK.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,352, dated August 31, 1886 (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. ScovIL, of Jamaica, in the county of Queens and State of New Y0rk,have invented a new and Improved Buckle, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my new and improved buckle; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same, showing it applied to a strap.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings and then be pointed out in the claim.
The frame A of the buckle is made of metal and in box form, open at both ends. A portion of the top of the frame is severed from the sides thereof and bent inward to form the inclined wall B. One end of the frame is secured to the strap 0 by rivets passed through suitable orifices, a, made in the frame A, as shown in Fig. 1. In a slot, (2, made in the bridge-piece D, is fitted the bent lever E, formed with the shoulders e e, the inner edge of which lever is adapted to grasp the strap 0 between it and the back of the frame A when the said lever is pressed down to the position shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, but will release the saidstrap when the lever is opened to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Between the inclined wall B and the bridge D is a space through which the end of the strap 0 may pass, as shown in Fig. 2, and for the purpose of strengthening the buckle and confining the strap 0, I secure in the side walls of the frame A the rod d, which occupies a position about midway between the inclined wall B and the edge of the bridge D; but in small buckles this rod may be omitted.
By constructing the buckle as described the same is simple, cheap, and effective, is strong and not liable to get out of order, and is convenient in use.
Having thus fully described invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The frame A, open at both ends and adapted to be riveted to the strap G, and formed with the inclined wall B and slotted bridge D, in combination with the bent lever E, substantially as described.
SAMUEL J. SCOVIL.
