Be it known that we, J AMEs C. PARMERLEE and ALONZO SWIFT, citizens of the United States, residing at Sedalia, Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Connecting Straps with Rings and other parts of Harness, of which the following is a specification.

rlhis invention has for its object to provide novel and eflicient means for securing the overlying parts of strap-loops for connecting the strap with a ring, buckle, or similar contrivance, as in halters, reins, bridles, and other parts of harness, whereby we avoid sewing or riveting the strap, and enable the ring, buckle, or other device to be attached or detached with facility and convenience. This we 'accomplish in the manner and by themeans hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, illustrating our invention, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of a strap connected with a ring in accordance with our invention Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 8,a transverse sectional view through the box-loop on the liney yof Fig. 2, andv Fig. 4L detached perspective views ofthe box-loop and the tongue-bar.

Referring to the drawings, the number l i11- dicates a strap bent around at one end to form a loop containing the ring 2, the turned extremity 3 of the strap overlying the strapbody. A metallic box-loop, 4c, of rectilinear form, encircles the two parts of the strap, and is composed of top and bottom walls and end walls 5, each of the latter having on its inner side a groove, G, located at or near a point centrally between the top and bottom walls, and the inner side of the bottom wall is constructed with a rectilinear recess, 7, at one edge, to produce the transverse shoulder or abutment 8. A straight flat bar, 9, is pro-V vided with tongues l0, to enter holes 11 in the turned extremity 3 of the strap, said bar being inserted between the body of the strap and the turned extremity thereof, so that its ends pass into the grooves 6, and its tongues 10 pass through the holes in the strap, and their points fall behind the shoulder or abutment 8, which sustains the points of the tongues against the pressure exerted on them by longitudinal strains on the strap. The tongue-bar, being interposed between the two overlying parts of the strap will thereby be held from loss or displacement, and the movement of the tongue-bar into the box-loop is limited by its ends coming against the inner terminations of the grooves.

To detach the parts, it is simply necessary to push the strap-body slightly through the box-loop toward the ring, and then draw the turned extremity of the strap outward sufficientl y to permit the tongue-bar to be conveniently removed, when the several parts may be disconnected.

The invention is useful for connecting straps with any part of a harness-such as halters, reins, buckles, and the like-and by the construction described andshown it is not necessary to sew or rivet the strap.

Ve do not coniine ourselves to providing a tongue or tongues on the bar, as such may be dispensed with, as the wedging action of the bar on the two parts oi' the strap will some times be sufficient to securely connue all in proper position 5 but atongue or tongues on the bar are desirable in that a much stronger and more substantial attachment of the parts is thereby provided.

Having thus described our inventiomwhat We claim is 1. The combination of the box-loop having top and bottom walls, and end walls having grooves in their inner sides, with the bar having its ends adapted to the grooves, substantially as described.
