SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 303,873, dated August 19, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT HERMAN MAN- 'rnY, of Mound City, Linn county, Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Buckle, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex act description.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved harness'buckle ol' simplified construction; and the invention consists, principally, ot' a. buckle having a sliding tongueplate held in a slot or passage made through the lower cross-piece ot' the buckle-frame.

The invention also consists in curving the tongue-plate to facilitate the insertion and removal of the tonguel'rom the strap, and also of the construction, arrangement, and combination ofparts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a plan view of a tracebuckle made in accordance with my invention and as it appears when applied for use. Fig. 2is a sectional elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the buckle separate from the straps.

A represents the frame of the buckle, composed in this instance of the side plates, (L a, cross-piece b, to which the hame-tug 3 is at tached, the outer plate, 0, and the lower crosspicce, d, which has the slot 6 formed in it to receive and hold the sliding tongue-plate O, the tongue of which is adapted to pass through one or the other of the holes 5/, made in the trace I), for holding the trace, as will be understood clearly from Fig. 2. The tongue f is notched at its upper end at i, where it comes in contact with the edge of the outer plate, 0, and the tongue is riveted to or formed with the plate C, and the plate 0 is curved, as shown at h, Fig. 2, so that when the plate is pushed forward in the slot- (1, for removing or adjusting the trace 1), the inner end of the plate will be forced downward or backward to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, which movement will partially withdraw the tongue J from the trace D, so that but slight outward movement of the trace is required to release the trace from the tongue f, so that it can be adjusted or removed from the buckle with ease, and the outer end of the plate 0 is slightly upset, as shown atj, to pre vent the plate from becoming detached from the buckle; and the plate 0 is formed, also, with the shoulders 7r 7;, which are adapted to come against the inner edge of the cross-piece (Z, and tend to prevent lateral movement of the plate 0. The outer plate, a, of the buckleframe is slightly cut away, as shown at i, to receive and brace the upper end of the tongue f, as will be understood from Fig. 1.

Constructed as described, the buckle is cheap, practical, easily handled, strong, and

less wearing upon the trace than common buckles, and the tongue being straight and braced at top and bottom, it may be made comparatively small, and it does not form a hook, over which the horsesmane or tail may catch, as do the tongues of ordinary buckles. Although I have shown my invention applied to a. trace-buckle, it will be understood that all forms of buckles may be made upon the same principle, and not depart from the spirit of my invention.

Havingthns described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A buckle-frame having the slotted crosspieced, in combination with the sliding tongueplate 0, fitted in the slot 0 of the said crosspieec, substantially as described.

The combination, with a buckle-frame constructed substantially as described, oi" the sliding tongue-plate 0, provided with the tongucf, and bent, as shown at it, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. The buckle-frame A, having the slotted cross piece d, in combination with the bent tongue-plate C, upset, as at j, placed in the slot of the said crosspiece d, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. The sliding tongue-plate 0, formed with the shoulders is, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. The-combination, with the buckle-frame, slotted, as at d, of the tongue f, secured to the sliding tongue-plate C, and formed with the notch '17, in combination with the outer plate, 0, formed with the notch r7, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
