Description

(Model) G.'W, FREEMAN.
BUGKLE.
Patented Oct. 11

UNITED STATES GEORGE W. FREEMAN, OF FRANKFORT, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES R. BROWN, OF SAME PLACE.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,258, dated October 11, 1881,
Application filed May 7, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, resident of Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented anew and valuable Improvement in Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the 1o annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a sectional View of my buckle, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion thereof.
This invention has relation to buckles; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in connection with the buckleframe, of the tongue and its cap or protector; also, in forming the buckle-roller with a concave projection to cover the endof the tongue, all as hereinafter shown anti described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA designates a harness-strap, and B a buckle connected thereto in any ordinary manner.
0 represents the tongue of the buckle, and D the sleeve or roller on the transverse bearing a for the end of the tongue. This roller or sleeve D is designed to be provided with a projecting concave cap or guard-piece, b, which is usually formed in one piece with the body of the roller when the latter is made, suitable dies being employed for stamping the cap-projection. The strap-hole 0 receives the end of the tongue, which projects through it, and as 5 the roller turns in drawing the strap the capprojection 12 is thrown down over the end of the tongue, and, fitting it neatly, enters the strap-hole c, forming a lock to secure the tongue in the strap. Italso provides a guard forthe end of the tongue, so that there is no projection to catch the netting used over harness or to pull out the hairs ot' the tail of the horse.
It is apparent that the tongue-cover can be made independent of the roller, if thought desirable; but the most economical plan is to form the sleeve and cover piece together, as above described. I
What I claim, and desire to secure ,by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the buckle-frame and its tongue, of a concave tongue-cover or cap connected to the frame and adapted to extend over the end of the tongue, substantially as specified.
2. In a buckle havingatongue, the bearing roller or sleeve D,having the concave tonguecap or guard b projecting therefrom and adapted to fall over the end of the tongue, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. FREEMAN.
