lGARDNER vxRAMsEY, oF BRooKsVILLE, FLORIDA.
HARNESS-BUCKLE.
Be it known that LGARDNEE V. RAMsEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooksville, in the county of Hernando,
5 State of Florida, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Harness-v Buckles; and I do hereby declare the follow. ing to be a full, clear, and' exact description of'the invention, suchv as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperl This invention relates to buckle devices for attachment to the harness in position to be ergaged by the reins to prevent them. l5
from lateral movement where they pass over I theback of the horse, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply. constructed device which'may be attached to the hip 'straps and against which the reins engage and-are thus prevented from slipping down from With these and other objects in View the s invention consists in a buckle frame having spaced transverse bars through which the hip strapsare adaptedto be Woven and with a tongue swinging upon one of the bars and engaging the strap, and an outwardly curving loop at one end of the frame against which the reins are adapted to engage, and be thus prevented from slipping down over the hips of the horse.
The invention furtherv consists in certain' novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out'in'the claim, and in the drawings illustrating the preferredembodiment of the invention, Fi re 1 is aside elevation ofthe improved uckle applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. -'is'apertached.
Much annoyance is encounteredlin driving horses bythe tendency of the reins when loosened to slip down over the hips of the horse and become entangled in projecting portions of the harness, especially wlth the loose ends of the billets of theV breeching straps or connections, and likewise withthe tail of the' horse, and the principal object of the present invention is to 'provide a simplypiconstructed attachment for the hip straps relatively near the juncture of the back straps and hip straps and adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.,

y be engagedl by the reins and thus prevented proved device comprisi..g an ob ong frame formedof side' members 10-11 and transverse members 12-13 with an intermediate transverse member 14, the member 14 provided1 with a swinging tongue 15 of the usual form, the hip strap represented at 16 engaged by the tongueA 15 whichis adapted to enter one of a series of holes17 in the hip strap so that the improved device may be range of the holes upon the lip straps.
Extending from one end of the frame is a loop 18 curving outwardly from the side members ofthe frame and thus forming an cated at 19 willbe engagedv and thus effectually prevented from' slipping down over the hi' s of the4 horse;7 The curved portion 18 wil be of suflicient length and pro-A ject a sulicient distance fromv the hip straps to preventv the reins under the normal conditions from slijbping' past the loop.
The improved device -is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and of the same material as other metal portions of tlie harness, and may be plated, tinned, japaniled or otherwise treated 1n the'same manner as ordinary harness without change therein except to provide the spaced hole 17 for the tongue 15.
W'hatis claimed, is
The combination with the hip straps of a harness, of an oblong buckle'frame through which said hip strap passes formed with an intermediate cross bar, a tongue swinging upon said intermediate cross 'bar and passing through said strap and bearing. by its free end upon one ot' the end bars of the ,the end bar with which the tongue engages and arranged at an angle to the longitudinal plane of the frame, whereby the loop is spaced away from the hip strap. l
