T at whom it may concern." Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SHEMUEL KEARNEY, a citizen of the United States, and

a resident of Franklinton,county of Franklin, and State of North Carolina,.have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-a Combination Hook and Buckle, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The subject of this invention is a combinationhook and buckle adapted, for use in various connections, but designed more particularly as an attachment to plow-barn ess in connecting the back-band and harness, so as to easily and expeditiously permit the adjustment of such connection as will provide for the change of working depth or run of the plow.

The primary objects of the invention are extreme simplicity of construction, facility of manipulation, positiveness of the buckle action, and security of the hook engagement.

' With the above purposes in view the device comprises generally a hookcarrying plate the sideportions of which are at a right angle to present parallel side flanges, between which is a buckle-clamp pivotally attached to the side flanges by small integral cars at its upper end laterally extending through openings therefor in the side flanges and riveted against the outer faces of the latter, the upper part of said buckle-clamp being bent to form a short inner tongue serrated at its edge to engage when the buckle-clamp is pressed against the hook the band or strap passed through suitable slots in the body of the plate. A peculiar arrangement of securing-button is employed to positively connect the lower part of the buckle-clamp with the.

hook, so that the latter will be closed to securely retain the ring or other part engaged therewith.

There are other novel features connected with the improved buckle and hook which are applicable to buckles or hooks alone, as will be more apparent hereinafter.

The upper broad part of the buckle-clamp G is bent to form the short under tongue 0, curved to we tend away from the contiguous portion of the body of the buckle-clamp, the free edge of said tongue being provided with a series of serrations or teeth 0 At the point where the bend occurs to formthe tongue C, as aforesaid, the buckle-clamp O has at each side a small rounded horizontal tubular lug, which'is split to form two small projections 0 adapted to pass through an eye therefor in the contiguous flange a and be riveted at the outer side thereof, said riveted projections thus obviating the necessity for employing independent rivets or a pin in securing the pivotal connection of the buckle-clamp with the plate.

Externally on an intermediate part of the buckle-clamp is a head D, made from a flat elongated metal section and having near its upper end a circular washer 'd, which turns therewith and has two inwardly-extending lugs cl, which pass through registering openings in the buckle-clamp and in the enlarged bearing portion (1 of a small oval-shaped plate or latch D at the rear side of the buclilo-clamp, the opening in said plate being such that the fiat lugs fit snugly therein, so that when riveted against the face of the same they will form a pivotal connection that will cause the plate D to partake of the movements of the head. It will be observed that the pivot-a1 connection of the plate D is an eccentric one, so that the major portion of said plate lies closely to but a short distance from the rear sideof the buckle-clamp.

- In use a band or strap E is passed through the upper and lower slots at, so as to extend over the depression a at the front of the bar A, and the buckle slid along the band until thedesiredadjustmentissecured. Then with the ring of the trace or other connecting part engaged with the hook the buckle-clamp is pressed inward against the hook, causing the end of the tongue to bite and bend that part of the band which is immediately over the depression a The head D can then be turned to move the plate D beneath the terminal part of the tongue, such engagement being largely maintained by the spring character of the latter. With the parts thus conditioned the buckle will be strongly attached to the band or strap and the ring of the trace or other part securely retained within the hook.

From the foregoing it will be appreciated that the improved buckle and hook embodying my invention is highly efiicient in use, can be readily applied and adjusted, and by reason of its extreme simplicity of construction can be readily and inexpensively produced in large quantities.

I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, as changes and modifications may be made in the details thereof without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is

1. The-combination with a base-plate having slots, and formed as specified, and a buckle-clamp pivoted thereto and operating therewith; of a head and a washer pivotally attached to the outer side of said clamp, and an oval plate attached to said head andwasher, at the inner side of said clamp, turning with said head and washer, and operating in connection with said clamp and base-plate.

2. The combination with a base-plate having slots and formed as specified, and a clamp pivotally attached thereto and operating therewith, of'a head formed with lugs passing through an opening in said clamp, a washer held in position between said head and keeper by said lugs, and with said head pivotally attached on the outer side of said clamp, and an oval plate pivotally attached by said lugs on the inner side of said clamp, turning with said head and washer, and operating in connection with said clamp and said base-plate. 3. The combination with a base-plate having slots, and bent and formed as specified, and a clamp pivoted to said base-plate, and an under tongue integral with said clamp and operating in connection therewith and with said base-plate; of a head, lugs on said head passing through an opening in said clamp, a Washer held in position between said head and said clamp by said lugs, and with said head pivotally attached on the outer side of said clamp, and an oval plate pivotally and eccentrically attached by said lugs, on the inner side of said clamp turning with said head and washer, and together therewith operating in connection with said clamp and base-plate.
