D. MOSMAN.
BUCKLE.
No. 434,720. Patented Aug. 19, 1890.
wim/wa ma wams varies no., commu UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID MOSMAN, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 434,720, dated August 19, 1896.
Application filed December 28, 1889.
To all whom/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID MOSMAN, of Meriden, in the county of New` Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Buckles and Buckle-Shields; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combined buckles and buckle-shields, and has for its object the provision of a strong and cheap adjustable connection for the contiguous ends of straps, which connection has no projecting portion liable to catch other portions of a harness or the inane or tail hairs of a horse.
To this end Iny invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of my improved buckle and shield. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. l, the straps being shown in dotted lines. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of modifications in the form of the arched guard.
A indicates the arched guard, and B the plate, having stud b. The guard A, as shown in Figs. l and 2, has its ends downwardly bent and provided with slots a a', the slot a being somewhat larger than slot a, the object of this being to allow the plate and its stud b to be slipped into the guard with the stud under the inner edge of slot a. This arch shape of the guardv with its slots avoids the necessity of using a continuous fer-rule, as has heretofore been employed. The plate B has at one end an opening b for attachment to the end of astrap or other portion of a harness, and on its under side has a shoulder b2 to limit the extent of its insertion into the guard. Near this shoulder is a transverse groove 6.3, and near the other end is another transverse groove t, which grooves iit over the portions of the guard outside the slots Serial No. 335,217- (No model.)
when the parts are united. One or both of these grooves might be omitted. The plate B is made tapering, as shown, to facilitate insertion in the guard, and the plate is preferably made with some elasticity to assist in holding the parts in position. When inuse the pulling strain on this connection is confined entirely to the plate B and its stud, the arched guard serving to keep the adjustable strap in its position; but when it is desired to separate the parts or adj ust the connection the arched guard can be slipped off the plate and the strap adj ust-ed on the stud, and then the guard is returned to its holding position.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the arched guard is of a form differing somewhat from that shown in Figs. l and 2. In Fig. 3 the shield or guard A is shown as in the form of a double-looped wire with downwardly-bent ends. In Fig. 4 lthe central or shield portion of the guard is straight or fiat, and its downwardly-bent ends are provided with slots, the whole forming a guard, which while not arched in the sense of 'being on the arc of a circle, yet is substantially so in effect, the exact shape of the shield portion of the buckle notbeing an essential feature of myinvention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, Is-
l. A combined buckle and shield, consisting of the arched guard A, having slots a a', and thev spring-plate B, having stud b and transverse grooves b3 b4, substantially as described.
`2.1A combined buckle and buckle-shield, consisting of a shield having its ends turned downwardly from the center portion, said ends being provided with openings, and a studded plate havinga projection at one end beyond the end of the shield for attaching a strap thereto, substantially as described. Y
In testimony whereof I attiX my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID MOSMAN.
