UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID MOSMAN, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLE-SHIELDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,720, dated December 16, 1879; application filed October 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID MOSMAN, of New Britain, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Buckle-Shield, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a shield for harness-buckles, so as to ornament the harness and also prevent the horses tail or mane from catching in the buckles.
The invention consists of a metal plate with curved ends provided with transverse slots and arranged over the buckle, as will be hereinafter described. I can also make it of guttapercha or other material.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top view of a buckled strap in which the buckle is covered with my improved shield. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; and Fig. 3 represents, in perspective, two varieties of my improved shield.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, the shield consists of a rectangular plate, A, having its ends a a bent or curved downward at obtuse angles to the top I) of the plate A. Through the ends a a are made transverse slots 0 c. The
top I) of plate A may be left solid and ornamented in any suitable manner, or it may be open, the two constructions being shown in Fig. 3. i
In Figs. 1 and 2, wherein the manner of applying my shield to a harness is illustrated,
B is aharness-strap, provided with a buckle, O, on one end. The end D of the strap B which is to be fastened to buckle G is first passed down through slot 0 and under plate A; thence through buckle G, where it is fast ened; thence it is carried up through slot 0, and finally passed through loop E.
When thus applied the shield covers the buckle so as to prevent the hairs of the horses tail and mane from catching in the buckle; also, as an ornament to the harness, being both silvered and gilded.
The shield is more particularly intended for the buckles which connect the crupper with the back-strap, the hip-straps, holdback-straps, and overdraw-clieck but it may be applied to any part of the harness where the mane and tail are apt to be caught in the buckles, or to any part of the harness as an ornament, and to other purposes Where it may be useful.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a buckle-shield composed of a rigid plate, A, having curved ends a a and transverse slots 0 c, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the strap B and buckle G, of the shield A, substantially as described.
DAVID MOSMAN.
