A. B. HARRELL.
SHIELD FOB. HARNESS. APPLIGATION FILED JULY 16,1909.

@WWW torrie errar SHIELD FOR HARNESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1U, 1910.
Application led July 16, 1909. Serial No. 508,011.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ANDY B. HARRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pilotmountain, in the county of Surry and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shields for Harness, of which the following is a speciiication.
rlhis invention relates to shields for harness and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a simple, reliable and efficient device for preventing the driving rein from catching under the buckles at the side of the draft animal.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for connecting a buckle to a back band or su-pporting strap so as to allow no projecting portions of the buckle and at the saine time to provide a convenient housing for the end of the back band or other supporting strap so that there will be no projeeting parts to engage the reins when they drop down at the side of the horse.
rlhese and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a breeching support and a portion of the breeching. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a back band and trace support made in accordance with my invention. Fig. l is a central vertical section through the same.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, of the drawing the numeral 1 designates the side portion of a breeching of the usual or any preferred construction. Connected to the breeching is a loop or dee 2 secured by means of a single rivet 3 extending through the loop and through the longitudinal strap l: upon the outer side of the breeching said rivet being secured to one of the folded portions of said breeching. Connected to the loop 2 is a shield 5 the lower end of which is doubled around the loop 2 as shown at G. At the upper end of the shield 5 a buckle 7 is connected by means of a doubled over end 8 and a rivet 9. Secured to the shield 5 is a back piece 10 connected to the shield 5 by lines of stitching 11 said back piece eX- tending below the upper edge of the breeching and its upper end extending underneath the buckle 7 and provided with a slot 12 through whichthe breeching support 13 eX- tion 10 after said strap is connected with the buckle 7.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4c the shield 5a has a back piece 10a secured thereto in a manner similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A buckle 7a is secured to the upper end of a strap 15 said strap being connected by means of rivets 16 to the shield. The trace supporting strap 17 is adjustably connected to the buckle 7a and the end of the strap is passed down between the members 5a and 10at as shown in Fig. 4. The trace 18 is passed under the stra 15 and is supported in adjustable position by means of a strap 19 which extends through openings in a loop 20 secured upon the t-race said loop having a buckle 21 secured thereto and the strap 19 being connected to the buckle as shown in F ig. 3.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a trace or breeching supported by means of my invention presents no projecting portions for the reins to catch under; that a shield of this kind can be readily connected to any form of harness and will present a smooth finished appearance and will effectually prevent the entanglement of the reins.
l claim A harness shield comprising a front and a back member connected together along their longitudinal edges and arranged with respect to each other to form open end portions, and a buckle secured to the upper end of the front member, the said rear member being curved approximately its entire length outwardly and away from the front member, the said rear member having its upper end extending beyond the upper end of the front member and having formed therein a slot which is disposed opposite the buckle of the said front member.
In testimony whereof I afix my signat-ure in presence of two witnesses.
ANDY B. HARRELL. Witnesses:
R. E. L. FLIrrrNs, S. F. SHUMATE.
