CHARLES H. BAGLEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
FASTENING FOR RElNs.
SPCIFCATIN forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,260, dated. September 3, 18-89.
Application tiled February 5 1889. Serial No. 298,748. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES I'I. BAGLEY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fastenings for Reins, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, silnple, convenient, and durable fastening for reins which may be more easily and quickly connected to and detached from the common ring or rings of t-he bridle-bits than those having abuckle, as heretofore employed and now in general use, whiclrrequire that the gloves of the operator be remove to manipulate the same; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
Figure I represents a perspective View of a rein-fastening constructed according to my invention, showing the same in an unfastened position. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal central section of the same ina fastened position.
In the drawings hereto annexed, which form a part of this speciication,it will be seen that A represents the main portion of the drivingrein, to which my improved fastening is secured in a suitable manner, or without the aid of stitching, as shown.
B represents a metallic double-loop frame provided upon the lower side with a central cross-bar C, from the upper side of which projects a short vertical stud E, and from the opposite or lower side of which projects a stud F, provided with a small projecting head H. This part of the fastening is attached near the return end of the rein, which is provided with a small hole adapted to fit snugly upon the said short stud E when the end portion of the rein is inserted within the double-loop frame B or between the end portions thereof and the said cross-bar() and pressed upon the stud E, thereby securing this studded doubleloop frame to the rein, as shown, or without the aid of stitching. Now I provide the opposite portion of the return or loop portion of the main part of therein with a longitudinal slot L, extending through a single thickness only of the rein, which is composed of two thicknesses of leather at this portion, and to the opposite sides of the rein-strap having the said slot L is secured a small slottedplate N, which plates have an opening at one end of their slots R of such size as to permit the head I-I of the said studFto pass throughthe same when brought into proper position by bending the rein near the said return or loop portion, and then drawing the stud along the slotted plates until the stud has a firm bearing against the opposite end of the said slots R of the said plates N, as shown in Fig. 2
which secures the return end portion of .the rein permanently to the main body of the rein in a very quick and convenient manner. It will be seen and understood that a reverse movement of the connecting parts will serve to instantly disconnect or detach the return end portion of the' rein in order to remove the same from the ring of the bridle-bits when in' actual use.
I am aware that Letters Patent No. 26,508, dated December 20, 1859, were granted to Margerum and Marshall for improvement in buckles, wherein it is necessary to twist or turn one part of the fasteninghalf-way round in order to connect it with or disconnect it from the other part, requiring both hands to manipulate the same. Therefore I broadly disclaim said invention, as it cannot serve the purpose contemplated by my invention, which can be easily and quickly connected ordisconnected by the use of one hand only.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim is- A rein-fastening consisting of the loopframe B, having a cross-bar C, provided on one side with a stud E and on the opposite side with a stud F, having a head H, and the rein A, provided with slotted plates N, adapted to receive the said stud F, as shown and described, as and for the purposes set forth.
CHARLES I-I. BAGLEY. Witnesses:
