HARNESS-BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,154, dated May 20, 1890.

To all whom. it Hetty concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN Q. STEELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Jay and Stat-e of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in buckles or fastenings for harness and analogous purposes; and it consists in certain details of construction which will first be described, and afterward pointed out in the claim. l attain these objects by the Incchan- -isn1 illustrated in the Aaccompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is what may be termed a 'top plan View of abuckle applied to one end of a strap. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line x :t of Fig. l.

A designates the end of a strap, rein, or tug, to which a buckle is ordinarily attached. The buckle, or what might be termed a substitute for the buckle in common use, consists of a piece of leatherB B', with a buckletongue D riveted or permanently attached thereto.

To use my invention the projecting end of strap A is pressed through the ring or other attaching device, where the ordinary buckle is used,folded back and pressed through the part B between the washers of the rivets and the adjacent edges, emerging under the free end of the tongue, as indicated in dotted lilies in Fig. 2. The tongue is next made to enter any desired one of a series of holes in the strap and then the end inserted in keeper As thus constructed, great lightness, neatness, equal strength, and durability Vare secured.

Therefore, what I claim, and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is-

A harness-buckle consisting of the flexible body portion B, in loop form and cut away centrally, as shown, and the rigid tongue D, havin the enlarged head and stud swiveled in one of the upper loop portions and adapted to swing laterally to engage a strap iu the cut-away portion, as and for the purpose described.
