UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. SWEYEA AND WILLIAM H. LOWE, OF WALLA WALLA, WASHINGTON TERRITORY.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,709, dated September 27, 1881.
' Application filed April 18, 1881. (No model.)
Washington, have invented a new and useful' Improvement in Buckles, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to furnish buckles for use in securing the ends of straps without sewing or rivets, and especially for use in attaching parts of harness.
The invention consists in a two-part boxbuckle having interlocking tongues, by which the ends of the strap are inclosed and held, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In-the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the two parts of the buckle separated; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the buckle as attachedupon a strap.
Similar letters of reference indicate correapondin g parts.
A A are the two parts of the buckle, which parts are of flattened tubular form and tapering lengthwise. Each portion A A is formed or fitted at its larger end with a wedge-shaped tongue, at, adapted for entering the-otherpartor tube, and such tongues a are formed each with a rigid tongue or lug, 11, upon the inner side. The tongue at of one tube is hinged or pivoted so that it can be swung upward to give room for insertion and removal of the strap ends. This hinged tongue is fitted with a spring arm or finger, 0, having a shoulder at its outer end for engagement with a notch or shoulder, d, formed on the inner side of the other tube to lock the parts together. Apin, 6, connected with the spring 0 and extending through one side of the tube, serves for releasing the parts.
In using the buckle the strap ends are entered at the smaller ends of tubes A A, and each end caught on the pin 1) of the other tube, such pins entering holes provided in the straps. The tubes A A are then brought together, and the strap ends become wedged between the tongues a. Any strain on the straps tends to draw the tubes more tightly together, and their separation, when the strap is loose, is prevented by the locking-spring c.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The buckle consisting of tubes A A, formed with'tongues a, both provided with pins b, and one of which tongues is hinged or pivoted substantially as shown and described, for use in the manner specified.
