UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL E. SMITH, OF REPUBLIC, OHIO.
BAG-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 289,721, dated December 4, 1883.
' Application filed September 26, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL F. SMITH, of Republic, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Bag-Holder, of which the following is a clear and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a 'new and improved device for holding a bag while it is being filled.
The invention consists of the combinations and construction of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bag-holder. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same.
TWQstandards, A, are secured to one end of a base, B, provided at the end opposite the one at which the standards are fastened with short legs B, and at the same end at which the standards A are fastened projecting side bars, 13", are fastened, to which rollers G are pivoted.
To one of the standards A a series of pins or studs, D, are fastened, which project from the same, and to the other standard a lever, E, is pivoted,.the free end of which can rest on ,one of the studs D. A pivoted connecting rod or bar, F, is pivoted to the lever E, and to a vertically-sliding cross-bar, G, adapted to, slide between thestandards.
To the'upper surface of the sliding bar G two vertical blocks, -H, are fastened, to which two cross -bars, J J, are fastened, which are on opposite sides of the standards. An elongated elliptical spring band orhoop, K, open at one end, is held by the clips L to the front bar, J. A bent rod, M, secured to the front shank of the spring band or hoop'K, passes through guide-clips N N on the ends of the bars J and J, and to that end of the rod M opposite theone fastened to the springframe a bar, 0, is pivoted, which is provided in its under edge with teeth decreasing'in size from the free end toward the pivoted end.
At its free end the bar 0 is provided with a notch, a, and a handle, I). The teeth of the bar 0 are adapted to catch on the upper edge of the clip N. The standards A can be used as handles to move the'bag-holder on the rollers O, and thus the filled bag can be moved about Very easily.
The device is used in the following manner: The tension in the spring hook or band keeps v the free ends separated. The ends of the sp ring-band are pressed together, and are then locked in position by engaging the notch a of the bar 0 with the upper edge of the clip N. The upper part of the bag I is placed around the band or loop K-'that is, the band will be within the upper end of the bag. The bar 0 is raised, and the free ends of the spring band or loop are separated by the tension of the same, and the shanks of the hoop are pressed against the bag and draw the top of the same taut, and the spring-hoop is locked in this position by the toothed bar 0, and the bag will be held on the loop. The top ofthe bag will be held open and the grain, flour, &o., can be filled into the bag without the use/ of a hopper. By means of the lever E the bar J, to which the hoop is fastened, can be raised or lowered, so that the bottom of the bag will rest on the base 13. When the bag is filled, the free ends of the hoop are drawn together and the bag will be released.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent* 1. Ina bag-holder, the combination, with thestandards A, of the Vertically-adjustable bars J J, the spring hoop or band K, the rod M, and the toothed bar 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a bag-holder, the combination, with the standards A, of the bars J J, the spring band or hoop K, the rod M, the toothed bar 0, the crossbar G, the blocks 'H, the connecting-rod F, and the lever E, substantially as herein shown and described.
DANIEL F. SMITH.
