PATENT OFFICE.
nvnvi) SORENSEN, OF BADGER, MINNESOTA.
WRENCH.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7'72,'751, dated October 18, 1904.
Application filed June 2,1904. Serial No. 210,834. (No model.)
To ail whom, tamer concern.-
Be it known that I, Evmi) SoRnNsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Badger, in the county of Roseau, State of Minnesota,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to the class known as alligatorwrenches, and which are used for grasping pipe or other bodies having curved faces, and has forits object to provide a device. of this nature which will be simple of construction and cheap of manufacture and in which the jaws may be operated to receive and grasp different-sized bodies.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, showing the jaws open. Fig. 2 is a view similar to F ig.'. 1, showing one ofthe side plates removed. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the jaws closed. Fig. 4 is a section on line 1 41 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a member 5,. having a jaw 6 at one end and being rounded adjacent to its other end to form a handle 7, the ex tremity of they handle being beveled, as shown, to form a screw-driver 8.
Secured to opposite sides of the member 5, adjacent to the jaw 6, are plates 9 and 10, which extend beyond the lower edge of the member, the member being provided between the plates with an arc-shaped recess 11, in which there is secured one end of a strapspring 12 for purpose to be presently described. Q
Pivoted between the plates 9 and and extending forwardly therefrom is a movable jaw 13, provided with serrations" 14 upon its inner face'for cooperation with serrations 15 upon the inner face of the jaw 6 to prevent movement of any body grasped between the aws.
Pivoted between the plates 9 and 10 and extending rearwardly therefrom is a handle 16, having an opening 17 at its free end for the reception of threading-dies, this handle extending normally at an angle to the handle 7,
in which position it is held yieldably by the spring 12, which bears at its free end against the inner face thereof.
Extending from the forward end of the handle 16, at the inner corner thereof, is an outwardly-turned hooked finger 18, and the jaw 13 is provided with a similar though oppositely-directed hooked finger 19 at its outer rearward corner. The handle 16 and the jaw 13 are thus provided with oppositely-directed sockets 20 and 21, respectively, with which are engaged the rounded ends 22 of alink 23, which is loosely disposed in the sockets. It
will thus be seen that if the handle 16 be moved in the direction-of the handle 7 against the action of the spring 12 the link 23 will be moved outwardly by the hooked finger 18 and will be forced into engagement with the Y finger 19, which will move the jaw 13 upon its pivot in the direction of the jaw'6, the jaw 13 and the handle 16 lying in alinement with each other when at'the inward limit of their movements.
When pressure is released from the handle 16, itwill be moved outwardly by the spring 12, and to correspondingly move the jaw 13 to prevent disengagement of the link 23 from the sockets 21 and 20 a strap-spring 24 is secured at one end to the inner face of the jaw 13 and extends rearwardly therefrom, bearing at its free end against the wall of the re-' cess 11 of the member 5. V
As shown, the handle 16 and the jaw 13 are provided with recesses 16 and 13, respectively, to accommodate the fingers 18 and 19, as shown. 7
In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials and proportions maybe used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- 1. A device of the class described, comprising a member having a jaw at one end and a handle at the other, a jaw pivotally connected with the member for cooperation with the first IOO named jaw, a handle pivotally connected with the member, said handle and pivoted jaw having oppositely-directed sockets therein, a link disposed with an end in each of the sockets, said second-named handle being movable upon its pivot to force the link against the wall of the socket of the pivoted jaw to move said jaw upon its pivot in the direction of the firstnamed jaw, and means for holding the pivot-ed jaw yieldably at the limit of its movement away from the first-named jaw.
2. A device of the class described having a member at one end and a jaw at the other, plates secured to opposite sides of the member and extending therebeyond, a jaw pivoted between the plates for cooperation with the first-named jaw, a handle pivoted between the plates rearwardly of the last-named jaw for movement toward and away from the firstnamed handle, means for holding the pivoted handle yieldably at the limit of its movement away from the first-named handle, said pivoted handle and pivoted jaw having oppositelydirected sockets in their inner ends, a link disposed with an end in each of the sockets, the pivoted handle being movable toward the lirstnamed handle to force the link against the wall of the socket of the pivoted jaw to move said jaw upon its pivot in the direction of the first-named jaw, and means for holding the pivoted jaw yieldably at the limit of its movement away from the first-nan'led jaw.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
