To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROGER H. CANFIELD and CARL W. LEMON, citizens of the United States, residing at Vivian, in the parish of Caddo, State of Louisiana, and Marietta, in the county of Washington and State of Ohio, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our present invention relates to-improvements in wrenches in whichmovable jaws are mounted in connection with a handle for operating the same to close upon the work and secure such jaws in clamping engagement during the operation of handling such material as pipe and the like.
Heretofore wrenches of this character have very generally consisted of jaws pivoted in a frame and having tail pieces projecting to be engaged each by the handle of the wrench, an example of which may be seen in the Patent No. 97 0,574, granted September 20, 1910, to J. F. Tiner, and entitled Pipe wrench]? Instead of having the handle of the wrench engage both tail pieces of the pairs of jaws, it is the primary object of the present invention to so arrange the several parts of the wrench that the handle will engage but a single tail piece, operating the respective jaw directly and providing interconnecting means between the aws for transmitting the closing motion of the jaw operated by the handle to its companion jaw in a manner that will afford equal pressure of the jaws on the work as developed from the same leverage.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views: Figure 1 is an elevational view of a wrench constructed in accordance with our invention, and with the front plate removed and the jaws shown in open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the jaws in closed position; and
Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of the improved wrench.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein one embodiment of the invention is illustrated, 1 and 2 designate the wrench aws, they being provided with flaring noses 3 and 4 for engaging the work when applied and automatically opening the jaws to receive the same; the gripping faces of the jaws being of the semi-circular or other configuration indicated at 5 and 6 for clamping round work, such as pipe or other objects to which wrenches of this type are usually fitted, it being understood that the gripping faces 5 and 6 of the jaws 1 and 2 may be provided with steel dies or roughened surfaces for insuring excellent grip.
The jaws 1 and 2 in the preferred embodiment illustrated in the drawings, are formed integral with enlarged central body portions 7 and 8 and oppositely-projecting tail pieces 9 and 10, such body portions being fitted to rock on bolts 11 and 12 and between plates 13 and 1 1, the bolt heads being upset on the exterior of said plates for binding the same together.
The inner faces of the tail pieces 9 and 10 are cut away divergently, as indicated at 15 and 16, to provide'suflicient space therebetween for receiving one end of a handle 17. The handle 17 is pivoted on a bolt 18, also secured to the plates 13 and 14:; and it will be appreciated by reference more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, that the pivot point of said handle 17 is at approximately the inner end thereof, there bemg no projecting portion to engage one tail piece.
Between the body portions 7 and 8 of the aws 1 and 2 are arranged some suitable means for transmitting the closing motion of one jaw to that of its companion, so that when one tail piece is engaged by the handle 17, as indicated in Fig. 2, to move its corresponding jaw to close about the work, the other jaw 2 will be simultaneously operated to close without any direct connection with the handle 17 but merely through the instrumentality of the connecting means between the body portions. which, as indicated in the drawings, may be a tooth, 19, and notch, 20, arrangement; the opposing faces of the body portions 7 and 8 to either side of the tooth 19 being inclined, as indicated at 21 and 22, for permitting the free operation of the jaws in moving to open and closed position.
In operation, the wrench, being in substantially the position illustrated in Fig. 1, is applied to the work by bringing the flaring noses 3 and 4 into engagement therewith, which will automatically swing the jaws 1 and 2 about their pivots 11 and 12 to open sufficiently to receive said work within the interior gripping faces 5 and 6. After the work has been received between the jaws 1 and 2, the handle 17 may be swung in either direction to engage either tail piece 9 or 10, for instance, as indicated in Fig. 2, by way of example, the handle may be swung to the left into contact with the tail piece 9, and by such operation the jaw 1 will be rocked about its fulcrum 11 to close about the work.
Simultaneously with the closing movement of the jaw 1, the tooth 19 will be operative in conjunction with the notch 20 to swing the companion aw 2 in the opposite direction to cooperate with the jaw 1 and close about the work in substantially the manner shown in Fig. 2. When the wrench is to be disengaged the handle is moved to the central position, releasing the engaged tail piece, and by rearward movement the jaws will readily separate and may be entirely withdrawn. 1
Although we have illustrated in the drawing and described the connecting means between the jaws as being a gear arrangement, nevertheless other mechanical devices might be substituted therefor; and we do not otherwise wish to be limited to the details of construction herein shown and described except as may be required by the appended claims.
We claim:
1. In a wrench, the combination with movable jaws, a single handle for said wrench in operative relation to actuate either of said jaws singly, and means between sald aws for moving the companion from the operated jaw, substantially as described. i
2. In a wrench, the combination with movable jaws, a single handle for said wrench in operative relation to actuate either of said jaws singly and selectively accordingly as the jaw is shifted in one or the other direction, and a gear connection between said jaws for simultaneously moving the companion from the operated aw, substantially as described.
3. In a wrench, the combination with movable jaws, fiaring noses on said jaws, means for operating one jaw, and a gear connection between said jaws for operating the companion jaw from the operated jaw, substantially as described.
4. In a wrench, the combination with movable aws, tail pieces on said jaws, a handle for engaging one tail piece only to move the respective jaw, and means for operating the companion jaw simultaneously with and from the moved jaw, substantially as described. V
5. In an improved wrench, the combination of a frame, jaws pivoted in said frame, tail pieces on said jaws, a handle for engaging either tail piece to rock the respective jaw, and a gear connection between said jaws connecting the same for simultaneous operation, substantially as described.
6. In an improved wrench of the character described, the combination of a frame, a pair of jaws pivoted in said frame, flaring noses on said jaws, tail pieces projecting from said jaws, a handle pivoted in said frame and adapted to engage either tail piece to rock the respective jaw to closed position about the work, and a tooth and notch connection between said j aws for connecting the same for simultaneous operation, substantially as described. 7
