Arena FREDERICK I-I. SEYMOUR, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
FJPBCIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,627, dated March 9, 1886.
Application tiled November 14,1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that [,FREDERIOK II. SEYMOUR, of Detroit, in the county of \Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-\Vrench Attachments for Mon key-\Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a pipe-wrench attachment for a monkey-wrench, and is hereinafter fully pointed out and described.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a monkey-wrench, except the handle, having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the pipe-wrench attachment.
A and B represent the fixed and movable jaws of a monkey-wrench. E and D being the posts on which the movable jaw slides, and 0 being a nut which engages with a thread cut on the post D, and which operates the movable jaw.
F represents an attachment adapted to fit 011 the monkey-wrench and be held between the jaws thereof, to operate as a pipewrench. The attachment F has a shank in which is cut a slot, M, to embrace the posts E D, and the ends of the two parts of the shank are turned up into lugs L L, which litagainst the head of the fixed jaw A and prevent the pipe attachment from being drawn out from between the jaws A B. At the other end of the pipe attachment F is a curved cam-head, which is toothed 0r serrated, as shown atT. At each end of this head a slot is cut therein. as shown in Fig. 2, forming lugs H H at the lower end of the head and lugs K K at the upper end. Between the lugs II II one end of a chain, I, is pivoted by a pin, G, which passes through the lugs 11 H and said chain and the other end of the chain is free. The slot at the other end of thehead is of such width as to receive a link of chain I when placed therein with its Serial No. 182,850. No model.)
greater diameter parallel with the walls of the slot, but too narrow to receive the chain in a contrary position, so that when placed therein the greater diameter of the chain will come against the under sides of lugs K K, and the chain cannot be drawn through the slot.
J represents a pipe in dotted lines. 7
To use my invention the attachment F is placed between the jaws of the monkevwrench in the manner shown in Fig. 1, arid the movablejaw B is screwed up to hold the attachment in place. WVhen a pipe is to be grasped the toothed-portion of the head is placed against the pipe, the free end of the chain drawn around the pipe and passed into the slot between lugs K K, and the monkeywrench turned so as to draw on the end of the chain, which is fastened to the pin G. Owing to cam shape of the head of the pipe attachment such motion tightens the chain I on the pipe in a manner well understood.
W'hat I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a monkey-Wrench, a pipe attachment consisting of a slotted shank adapted to straddle the post or posts of the wrench, and having at its end upturned lugs, and a cam-shaped head having a chain fastened to one end thereof, and at the other end a slot to receive the free end of said chain. substantially as shown and described. I
2. As a new article of manufacture, a pipewrench attachment consisting of a slotted shank adapted to straddle the post of a wrench, and provided with a toothed cam-head having lugs K K, and a chain, I, attached to said cam-head, substantially as described.
FREDK. H. SEYMOUR. WVitnesses:
NATHAN NEFF,
WILLIAM WADE.
