WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACK R. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duson, in the parish of Lafayette and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
rl`his invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to the sliding jaw type, and has for its object to provide means for holding the sliding jaw locked at its point of adjustment.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specic structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, and that any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the present invention, Fig. 2 is a view partially in vertical longitudinal section, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the nut, Fig. 5 is a view of a modified form of the adjusting means partially in section.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a wrench comprising a stock 10, a fixed aw 12 at one end, and
an enlarged integral handle 13 at the other end. The handle is arranged with a portion 14 extending laterally of the shank 10 and this portion of the handle at the Lipper' end is recessed as shown at 15, said recess por tion extending slightly beyond the forward face of the shank and being adapted to receive a circular flange 16 formed at the lower end of an adjusting nut 17 The forward face of the stock of the wrench is notched directly above the portion 14 as shown at B and this notch receives the rearward edge of a plate C surrounding the nut and extending over the flange 16 and secured to thel portion 14 at its outer edge. It will thus be seen that the nut 17 is swiveled to the handle 13. rIhe nut 17 is provided with a threaded screw 18 formed integral therewith, and engaged at its upper end in a threaded passage 19 formed in a sliding jaw 21. The nut 17 in its lower face is provided with a circular series of passpecifcauon f Letters Patent.

the passages 23 of the nut 17. The dog 25 is provided with an outwardly projecting pin 29, and this pin is arranged for movement in a vertical slot 30 formed in the handle 13 and communicating with the `passage 26. The slot 30 is in communication with transversely extending notches 31 and 32 respectively, and these notches are thus arranged to receive the pin 29v to hold the dog vat the upward and downward limit of its movement, respectively.
Then it is desired to adjust the jaw 21 the nut 17 is revolved and after the proper adjustment of the jaw has been obtained the dog is released from the notch 32 whereupon the portion 24 of the dog will be projected into one of the passages 23 thus holding the nut locked. In order to prevent casual displacement of the portion 24 of the dog from the passage 23 the pin 29 is shifted to bring the same in the notch 31. It will be understood that the pin 29 must be shifted to bring the same in the notch 31, and it will also be understood that the pin 29 mustbe shifted in an opposite direction and pushed downwardly in the slot 30 and thence into the notch 32 when it is desired to hold the dog disengaged from the nut.
In Fig. 5`there is shown a modified form of the device in which there is provided a wrench having a sliding jaw carrying an exteriorly threaded nut 41 of the usual type, engaged with the rack face 42 formed on the shank 43 of the wrench. The nut 41 is provided with al series of perforations 23 arranged similarly -to those in the nut 17. A recess 44 is formed in the lower end of the sliding member 40, the recess opening into a passage 45 in which the nut 41 is disposed. A plunger dog 46 is disposed slidably in the recess,-44, and has engaged inwardly thereof, a helical spring 47 to throw the reduced end of the dog 46 into engagement with the openings 23 in the nut 41.

In a wrench the combination with a shank having movable and stationary jaws and supporting portions; of an adjusting nut revolubly mounted upon the supporting portions, said nut having a circular series of passages formed therethrough, said supporting portions having a socket formed therein beneath the nut, a dog slidably mounted in the socket, a downwardly extending reduced portion carried by the dog, a spring engaged beneath the dog and resting upon the bottom of the Socket said spring surround ing the reduced portion, a reduced upwardly extending portion carried by the dog and arranged for engagement in the passages of the nut interchangeably, said supporting portions having a slot therethrough communicating with the socket and a pin carried by the dog and extending outwardly of said slot, said slot having transversely extending notches at each end thereof and adapted to receive said pin, to hold said dog with its upwardly extending reduced portion at either limit of its movement into or out of engagement with the passages.
2. In a wrench, the combination with a stock having a stationary jaw, of an integral handle carried by the lower end of the stock and extending laterally from one side thereof, said laterally extending portion having a recess in its upper face, said recess extending slightly beyond the forward face of the stock, said stock having a notch therein directly above the laterally extended portion of the handle, an adjusting nut having an enlarged iange engaged in the recess, a confining plate disposed around the nut and engaged over the flange to permit rotation thereof, said plate extending into the notch, a sliding` jaw upon the wrench, operative connections between the sliding aw and the nut, said nut having a circular series of passages therethrough, said laterally extending portion having a socket therein beneath the nut, a spring actuated dog seated within the socket and having a4 reduced upper end for engagement with the passages and a pin carried by the dog and extending laterally through a slot in the handle, said slot having notches at each end to receive said pin and hold the dog at the limit of its movement in either direction.
