SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,345, dated October 9, 1883.
Application ined May 10,1853.v (No model.)
To all wtcm t may concern Be it known that I, Gnorgen Tiroler, of South Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented neur and useful Improvements in Vises; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of vises; and the invention consists in the peculiar construoti on and arrangement of the parts, whereby a quick and easy adjustment of the parts is obtained, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a side elevation of ny improved vise With the jaws closed together. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.V
Fig. 3 is a similar vievcr With jaws opened through the medium of the screw. Fig. 4 is, a like vieWWith the movable jaw extended through the medium of the ratcheted slide.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of the vise, which is provided with the stationary jaw V. The body A is provided with a rectangular opening through its entire length to receive the slide C, the under face of which isprovided with a ratchetface, and With which engages the stud or stop D, projecting up through the bottom of the body, such stud being kept in its engagement with the ratchet by the spring-lever E. The slide O has a channel formed in its upperface, to receive the guide-bar F of the movable javv G. Through this guide-bar F and the foot of the movable javv the screw H passes, as in the usual manner, the inner end of such screw engaging with a nut, I, rigidly secured in the slide C. The upper face of the body A is slotted to receive a T-headed bolt, K, by means of which the device is secured to the bench, and through the medium of which the vise may be secured to or from the face of the bench and at any angle thereto, if desired.
In practice, when it is desired to extend or open the jaws beyond the limit of the screw, the spring-lever is depressed, so as to disengage the stud from the ratchet, which will al low the slide to be drawn out the desired length, when, releasing the spring-lever, the stud engages With the ratchet and prevents the further withdrawal of the slide, While it does not prevent its being pushed in till the movable jaw comes in contact with the Work, Where it `can readily be secured by operating the screw, as in the ordinary manner.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination with the body A and jaw lB of a vise, theratcheted slide C, guide-bar F, screur H, and movable jaw G, the said ratcheted slide being adapted to be advanced or retracted through the body A, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with the body A and jaw B of a vise, the ratcheted slide C, guide-bar F, screw II, movable jaw G, stud D, and springlever E, When constructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
3. In a vise constructed substantially as herein described, and in combination with the body A thereof, the T- headed bolt K, adj usted Within a slot in the upper face of such body, as a means for adj ustably securing the device to a bench, substantially as specified.
