WORK-HOLDING VISE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN W. WIDGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Downsville, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Work-Holding Vises, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to holding Vises.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of v a device of the above stated character wherein means are employed for locking the movable jaw of the vise in clamping engagement with the work, thereby eliminating the necessity of the party performing such duties in adjusting the clamping of the movable jaw into engagement with the work placed in the vise, thereby enabling the said party to have the use of both hands for lifting and handling such work. i
To this end, use is made of a lever pivotally mounted in the casing of the vise and having connection with a foot operating crank, whereby upon the operation of such crank will cause the said lever to lock the movable jaw in clamping engagement with the work, and tension means fastened to the lever and serving to move the lever to release position upon the throw of the foot operating crank.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a tensioned toothed dog mounted within the casing of the vise whereby upon the tensioning of said lever, will cause an inward movement of the jaw, thus sework curely holding the work between the jaws of the vise, and further upon the operation of the dog simultaneously locks the jaw against movement.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, 5 denotes the vise generally comprising a casing comprising oppositely disposed side walls 6 and end walls 7. Cross cleats 8 are arranged across the open bottom of the casing at opposite ends thereof and having apertured extended portions 9 through which pass fasteners, not shown, for securely mounting the vise upon the work bench 10. The oppositely disposed side walls 6 of the casing are extended above the plane of the end walls thereof to provide a guide for the movable jaw 11 of the vise. A cover 12 is suitably secured to the upper edges of the opposite side walls 6 and disposed longitudinally of the casing for closing the latter and supporting the movable jaw in active position within said casing. This cover 12 at its forward end 13 is provided with a fixed jaw 14 adapted to co-act with the movable-jaw 11 for clamping the work in the vise, as will be clearly understood. The said movable jaw 11 is provided with an elongated shank 15 having on the under face thereof a series of teeth 16, the purpose of which will appear as the description of the invention is proceeded with. It isthe purpose of this invention to enable the operator to place within the vise heavy or long pieces of work, thus requiring the operator to have access to both of his hands, and to this end a' lever 17 is pivotally mounted at a point substantially medially of the length of the casing, and within the same through the medium of the pin 18 passing through the side walls 6 of the casing at a point in adjacent relation to the open end thereof, and adapting the lever to swing in a longitudinal plane with respect to the casing 6. The said lever 17 embodies a shank 19 which protrudes through the open bottom end of the casing, and through a suitable slot formed in the work bench 10, in order that the lever may depend a distance underneath the bench to permit of a suitable foot operated means 20 to be pivotally connected to the lower extremity thereof. This foot operated means 20 is in the form of a foot pedal 21 having pivotal connection with the lower end of the shank 19 through the medium of a pair of pivot links 22. A rack or other suitable means designated by the numeral 23 is employed for holding the foot pedal 21 in adjusted position. actuating dog 27 is formed with a serrated upper surface 29 for cooperating with the teeth 16 of the shank of the movable jaw 11, as better shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, and the purpose of which will be clearly set forth. The stub 30 depends from the under surface of the actuating dog 27 and adapted to be engaged by one end of a coil spring 31, while the opposite end of said spring embraces a similarly formed stub 32, formed on' senting diverging upper and lower walls 35 and 36 respectively. The upper diverging wall 35 is formed with a sharpened transverse edge 37 forming the tooth of the looking dog which engages with the rack bar 16 of the movable jaw for holding the latter in locked position. The tail 26 of the actuating dog 27 is formed with a lip 38, of a tapering configuration to conform with the contour of the groove 34, and is movably seated therein. This locking dog 33 is tensioned by a coiled spring 39 having its upper end fitting around a stud 40 formed on the jaw, and its opposite end fitting around a like stud 41 formed on the opposite cross piece 8 of the casing.
In briefly describing the operation of the vise, it is to be stated when the lever 17 is in the position shown in Fig. l'o-f the drawing, the movable jaw 11 is free to slide within the casing 6'and the same may be readily operated by grasping the handle 42 of the movable jaw to the approximate distance for the insertion of the work, not shown, between the respective rigid and movable jaws of the device. Assuming the'work is of a nature to require the use of both handsof the operator for inserting the same within the vise, the lever 17 is swung toward the forward end of the vise by pressing down on the" foot lever 21. This latter described acbeing nrmly positioned in contact with the work, the next operation of the actuating dog will, cause the lip 38 thereof to ride onthe extension 43, forcing the tooth of the locking dog into'engagement with the rack bar of themovable'jaw. In order to prevent any unnecessary downward movement of the respective actuating and locking dogs, I provide cross pins 44 which are positioned directly under the dogs. 1 7
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principles of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended thereto.

1. A vise embodying a casing provided with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw' slidably mounted in said casing and havingatoothed shank, a lever pivotally mounted within said casing, tensioned means carried by said lever for moving said jaw to closed position, and tensioned means operable through the operation of the latter mentioned means for locking said movable jaw in adjusted position.
2. A vise embodying a casing provided with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw mounted in said casing having a toothedshank, a spring tensioned locking dog pivotally mounted in said casing, a lever pivotally mounted in said casing, and fan actuating dog pivotally mounted on said lever, and adapted to simultaneously operate the locking dog into locking engagement with the toothed shank- 4-. A vise embodying a casing provided with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw mounted in said casing having a toothed shank, a spring tensioned locking dog pivotally mounted in said casing and formed with a transverse groove, a lever pivotally mounted within said casing, and a spring tensioned actuating dog pivotally connected with said lever and provided with a lip, the lip of the actuating dog engaging in the groove of the locking dog for causing a simultaneous operation of the latter dog upon the operation of the former mentioned dog.
5. A vise embodying a casing provided with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw mounted in said casing and formed with a toothed shank, tensioned locking means for said jaw, a lever, and foot operating means pivotally connected to the lever for rocking the lever for forcing said locking means in engagement with the toothed shank of said movable jaw.
6. A vise embodying a casing provided with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw mounted in said casing and having a toothed shank, a locking dog pivotally mounted in said casing, a lever pivotally mounted in said casand foot operating means for imparting movement to said lever for causing the rocking of the dog into locking engagement with the teeth of said shank.
7. A Vise embodying a casing provided with a fixed jaw, a movable jaw slidably mounted in said casing and having a toothed shank, a spring tensioned lever pivotally mounted within said casing, means carried by said lever for moving said jaw to closed position, and tensioned means positioned on a line with the former mentioned means and operable through the operation of the latter mentioned means for rocking said movable jaw to adjusted position.
