Description

No, 885,363. 'PATENTED APR. 21, 1908. LE- ROY MYERS.
GOMBIN ATION TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED DEO.31,1906.
LE ROY MYERS, OF FREMONT, OHIO.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 21, 1908.
Application filed December 31, 1906. Serial No. 350,192.
T 0 all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, LnRoY Mricns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combination tools, and is designed to be used as a pipe wrench, nut wrench, hammer and measure, and has particular reference to a combined pipe wrench, nut wrench and ham mer.
To this end the invention consists in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of the several arts of the device as hereinafter described, 1 lustrated in the drawing, and more particularly pointed out .in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing: Figure 1 shows a perspective View of the tool, the jaws occupying an open position, the closed position thereof bc ing indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 90*1, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the shank and removable hand piece, and Fig. 4 is a section on line yy, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the shank of the device, which is squared, as shown, and is provided on its sides 2, 2, with central longitudinal depressions 3, 3. In each of the depressions 3, 3, is formed a rack 4, the teeth thereof being set toward the top of said shank, for a purpose hereinafter stated. On each side of each longitudinal depression 3, 3, is a scale or measure 5, for the purpose of setting the sliding jaw of the wrench open to the desired extent.
The numeral 6 indicates the head or fixed jaw of the tool, and is rigidly secured to the top of the shank 1, or if so desired it may be made integral therewith. The rear under part 7 of the head or fixed jaw 6 is curved, and provided with a series of biting or gripping teeth, and terminates in a depending portion 8 sufficiently long to cover and protect the rearwardly extending portion 9 of the sliding jaw. The rear face of the head 6 is finished to rovide a hammer surface, and its lower end is provided with a nail drawer.
The numeral 10 indicates the sliding jaw, and has a central squared channel 11 therethrou h, adapted to receive and slide on said shank 1, as is evident. In each side 12 of the sliding jaw 10 is, preferablyasquared ropening 13, extending into the channel 11 j and adapted to register with the rack 4. I11 1 each of these openings 13 is set a spring I pressed detent 14 having a chisel edge for the I purpose of engaging the teeth of the rack 4 to hold said sliding jaw against an opening movement when the tool is in use either as a nut wrench or as a pipe wrench, as is apparout.
The numerals 15, levers, the rear ends of which are secured to the respective detents 14. 14, and their opposite ends provided with buttons 16, 16, and resting against springs 17, 17, in recesses 18, 18, in the sides of said sliding jaw 10, and are for the purpose of manipulating said detents 14, 14, to permit the adjustment of said sliding jaw 10 to the position desired, as is evident. This end is accomplished by pressing I upon the buttons 16, 16, which, by reason of the levers 15, 15, being pivoted, will raise the chisel ends of the detents from engagement with the teeth of the rack 4, and permit said sliding jaw to be set at any desired point.
The numeral 19 indicates a removable I handle-piece fitted onto the end of the shank 1, and is held securely, though removably, thereon, by the spring catches 20, 20.
I11 practice this tool is found to be very convenient, as it may be used as a pipe wrench, or as an ordinary nut wrench, as j well as a hammer and also for the purpose of drawing nails and for measuring purposes. It will be readily seen that by this construction the sliding jaw may be easily and quickly removed by first removing the handlepiece and then sliding the jaw ofl said shank, either for repairs or for renewal. The rear upper surface of the lower jaw is provided with biting teeth to assist in giving a firmer hold. on a pipe being operated upon.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
The combination, in a wrench, of a shank provided upon its opposite sides with longitudinal grooves, the bottom wall of each groove bein serrated to form a rack, a fixed aw carried by said shank at its outer end, a sliding jaw carried by said. shank and provided with a central channel through which the shank is adapted to extend to permit the movement of said jaw towards and from the fixed jaw, said sliding jaw having a pair of openings formed in each side thereof, one i opening of each pair communicating with 15 indicate pivoted said channel and registering with the correend of the corresponding lever, to hold the 10 sponding move, a chisel-edged detent disdetents normally in engagement with the posed wit in each of the last-mentioned teeth of the corresponding rack.
openings, a lever pivoted to each side of the In testimony whereof I affix my signature,
' sliding jaws and secured at one end to the in presence of two witnesses.
corresponding detent and provided at its op LE ROY MYERS. posite end with a button, and an expansive Witnesses: coil-spring located within the other opening JOHN J. LEHMANN,
of each pair and bearing against the button F. W. HEFLINGE.
