WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15,1907,
Application filed July 30, 1907. Serial No. 386,212.
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID J. DAWSON and JosEPH R. SIROIIBACH, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Freedom, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to that type of wrench commonly known as a quick acting monkey wrench. V
The invention has for its object the provision of positive and reliable means in connection with a wrench whereby the movable jaw thereof can be easily and quickly adjusted.
Another object of this invention is to dispense with the use of screw threads and nuts for holding the jaw of a wrench in a position to which it is adjusted.
With the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically pointed out in the appended claim. 7
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench, Fig. 2 is a similar view partly in section, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of a wrench taken on the line iII-III of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective I view of the locking member of the wrench.
in the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the shank having a detachable handle 2 and a fixed gripping jaw 3. The shank l is substantially rectangular in cross section, and upon its one edge is provided with teeth 4.
Slidably mounted upon the shank 1 is a movable jaw 5, comprising a gripping extension 6 and side plates 7 said side plates being connected together by pins 8 and 9, the former serving as a pivot pin for a locking member 10, while the latter serves to prevent the jaw 5 from becoming accidentally disengaged from the shank l. The locking member upon its one edge is provided with teeth 11 for engaging the toothed shank 1, while the lower part of the member extending beneath the movable jaw 5 terminates in a handle 12 to permit of the member 10 being easily moved. its inner face, the locking member is cut away so as to clear the guardpin 9 as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
To adjust the movable jaw 5 of the wrench it is only necessary to move the member 10 outwardly, at which tiinethe jaw 5 can be moved to engage an object, and then the member 10 swung inwardly to engage the shank 1 and hold the movable jaw in its adjusted position.
Since the Wrench is constructed of practically four parts, it can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost. The simplicity of construction also prevents the wrench from being injured by rough handling,
and the rapid adjustment of the jaw 5 is adapted to facilitate the work of a mechanic or person having use for a wrench.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi In a wrench, a shank having a handle on one end and a fixed jaw on the other end, said shank provided on the rear edge thereof with teeth, a movable jaw slidable on the shank open along its rear edge throughout the length of tne jaw and having two pins therethrough in proximity to the shank, one pin acting as a pivot pin and the other as a guard for the jaw, and a toothed locking member mounted on said pivot pin being cut away on its inner face to clear the guard pin and one end extended beyond the jaw to form a finger grip.
' In testimony whereof we aflix our signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID J. DAWSON. JOSEPH R. STROHBACH.
