WRENCH.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK McMILLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

'This invention relates to improvements in pipe-Wrenches.

The object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character by means of which a section of pipe may be gripped and turned without caving or bending the same and without the necessity of hammering the joint.

A further object is to provide a pipe-- wrench having a movable jaw and means whereby said movable jaw may be held in its adjusted position, means also being provided to facilitate the operation of the holding mechanism.

. With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the handle or shank of the wrench, which is threaded for a portion of its length, as shown at 2, and is provided with a longitudinally-extending groove or channel 3. The upper end of the handle or shank 1 is recessed on its opposite sides, while in said recessed portions is secured curved parallel fixed j aw-plates 4, said plates being spaced apart by the reduced upper end ofthe handle and by a spacing-block 5, arranged between the opposite ends ofthe j aw-plates, as shown.

The inner edges of the plates 4 are provided with V-shaped grippin -surfaces on which are formed gripping-teet 1 6.

Slidably mounted upon the shank or handle 1 is a movable jaw 7, said jaw having on its inner end an inte ral laterally-projecting collar 8, which slidab y en ages the shank or handle 1. On the outer ege of the jaw 7 is formed a V-shaped gripping-surface provided with gripping-teeth 9, which coact with the Specification of Letze-:s Patent.

The collar 8 is provided witlian inwardly-projecting spline or feather 8, adapted to engage the groove or channel 3 in the shank or handle 1, thereby guiding the movable jaw in its movements on the shank 1 and preventing any lateral movement or turning of said jaw. 4

Adapted to be screwed up and down on the threaded portion of the shankl is a lockingnut 10, said nut being adapted to be screwed up into engagement with the collar 8 on the movable jaw to hold the latter in engagement with the pipe or other article to be turned. In order to facilitate the turning of the nut 10, the same is provided with a handle 12, said handle being pivotally connected to a laterally-projecting lug 13, formed on one side of the nut, as shown. The handle 12 is provided with a longitudinally-disposed bore 14, in which is Slidably mounted a lockingpin 15, the outer end of which is adapted to be engaged with o ne or the other of recesses 16, formed in the heads oftlre lug 13, thereby holding said handle in an' operative or inop erative position. The pin 15 is normally held in a projected position by means of a coil-spring 17, arranged thereon, near the inner end of the pin. One end of the spring 17 is adapted to bear against a shoulder 18, formed on the pin, and the opposite end of the spring engages a screw-plug 19, arranged in the outer end of a recess or enlargement 2 0 of the bore 14, in which the spring and collar on the pin are arranged. The inner projecting end of the pin 15 is provided with a head 21, by means of which the pin may be retracted from engagement with the recesses 16 to permit the handle to be swung from one position to another. I/Vhen the handle 12 is not in use, the same is swung inwardly parallel with the handle or shank of the wrench, as shown in full lines in Fi 1, and when in operative position the hand e is swung to a osition at right angles to the shank or han le 1, as shown in dotted lines inthe same figure, the handle being held in such position by means of a locking-pin, as hereinbefore described. 1

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V v 1. In a wrench of the character described, the combination with an apertured fixed jaw having a threaded shank or handle, of a movable jaw ada ted to slide on said shank, means to guide sai movable jaw in its movement, a locking-nutl adapted to be screwed up or down on the threaded portion of said handle, to hold said movable Jawin its adjusted'positions, and a handle havin a spring-projected locking-pin, said handeJ connected to said nut to facilitate the turning ofthe same, substantially as described.

2. In a wrench of the character described, the combination with an apertured fixed aw having a longitudinally-grooved shank or handle threaded for a portion of its length, of av movable jaw slidingly mounted on said shank, a spline or feather arranged on said movable jaw to engage the groove in said shank, a locking-nut adapted to be screwed up or down on the threaded portion of the latter to hold said movable jawin its adjusted positions, a handle pivotally connected to said nut, and means to lock said handle in operative and inoperative positions, substantially as described.

In a wrench of the character described, the combination with an apertured iixed jaw having a longitudinally-grooved shank or handle threaded for a-portion of its length, of a movable jaw slidingly mounted on said shank, a spline or feather arranged on said being pivotally the nut whereby said handle may be held in operative and inoperative positions, and means to retract said locking-pin, substantially as described.

4. In a Wrench of the character described,

the combination with a threaded longitudi nally-grooved handle or shank having on its upper end curved, parallel fixed jaw-plates spaced apart and provided on their inner edges with V-sha ed toothed gripping-surfaces, of a movab e jaw having an integral ofiset collar to slidably engage said shank, a V-shaped toothed gri ping-surface formed in the outer edge of sai jaw to coact with the grippingsurfaces of said fixed jaw-plates, a lock1ng-nut adapted to be screwed up and down on the threaded yportion of said shank, a handle pivotally connected to said nut, a sprin -projected locking-pin arran ed in said andle to en age recesses in t e nut whereby said handIe is held in operative and inoperative position, and a head formed on the outer end of said pin whereby the same may be retracted from engagement with recesses, substantially as described.
