HOWARD T. DUNCAN, OF ENON VALLEY, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.
Application led October 4, 1907. Serial No. 395816.
T o all whom 'tt may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD T. DUNCAN, a citizen of the United States Vof America, residing at Enon Valley, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have in.- vented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to that type commonly known as a monkey wrench, wherein a movable jaw is adjusted to grip a nut or similar object.
My invention aims to provide positive and reliable means for quickly adjusting the movable jaw of a wrench, without the -use of screw threads or a similar means that are liable to be damaged when the wrench is roughly handled.
Further, my invention aims to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive wrench.
The invention will be presently considered in detail, and reference will now be had to the drawing wherein,
Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench, the handle thereof beingpartly broken away, Fig. 2 is a similar view of a wrench partly in section, Fig. 3 is an edge view of a wrench, and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of a wrench taken on the line xof Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a shank having a toothed edge 2. The shank carries the fixed jaw 3 and a detachable handle 4. Upon the shank 1 is slidably mounted a jaw 5 having a vertically disposed opening 6 for the shank 1 and a proj ecting gripping surface 7, which is employed in connection with the jaw 3 for gripping a nut or similar object. The front edge of the jaw 5 is provided with a transverse Opening 8 and movably mounted in said opening is a slide 9, said slide being pivotally connected, as at 10, to the long arm 11 of the U-shaped spring 12. The spring 12 is pivfront side of the jaw 5 and the tension of said spring is adapted to normally hold the slide in engagement with the toothed edge 2 of the shank l. When it is desired to adjust the jaw 5, the U-shaped end of the spring 11 is depressed, causing the upper end of said spring to move the slide 9 outwardly and release the jaw 5, whereby it can be easily and quickly adjusted upon the shank 1.
The invention as above described is susceptible to such modifications as are permissible by the appended claims.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. In a wrench, the combination with a toothed shank having a fixed jaw, and a detachable handle, of an adjustable jaw slidably mounted upon said shank, said jaw having openings formed therein, a slide movably mounted in one of said openings for engaging said toothed shank, lugs carried by said jaw, a U-shaped spring pivotally mounted between'said lugs, and connecting with said slide and bearing against said jaw.
2. In a wrench, a shank having a Xed jaw and provided on its inner face with teeth, a movable jaw on the shank, and movable toward and from the 'fixed jaw, the said movable jaw having an opening, a slide in said opening, a substantially U-shaped spring pivoted on the outer face of the movable jaw having one arm thereof bearing against the outer face of the jaw and the other arm pivotally-connected to the outer end of said slide.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
I HOWARD T. DUNCAN.
