Description

PATENTDJULY 14., 1908.
No. 893,093. A 'I'. W. NOTT; WRENGRN 4 APPLICATION P ILED 001.25, A1907.
DT- T FINLEY W. NOTT, OF BLUEFIELD, WEST VIRGINIA.
Y WRENCH.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1908.
Application filed October 25, 1907. Serial No. 399,137.
To all whom it may concern:
4Be it known that I, FINLEY W. NOTT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bluefield, in the county of Mercer and State of West Virginia, have invented an Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in wrenches, and consists in certain novel con# structions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a side view of the wrench partly in section. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the upper end of the same; and Fig. 3is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction ofthe arrow.
The present embodiment of my invention comprises a chambered handle A, provided at one end with a xed jaw a3, secured to the handle by means of screws a, the said fixed jaw having an opening therethrough in which the end of the handle is received, the opening being closed at the outside of the fixed jaw by means of a plate a", secured to the iixed jaw by the screws ax. leads from the front side of the handle to the chambered portion thereof, and the said front side is "provided with a series of upwardly facing ratchet teeth a2, for a purpose to be presently described.
A movable .jaw B is provided with an opening b therethrough through which slides the handle A, the opening t being of somewhat greater cross section than the handle in order to slip freely thereon. The co-acting faces of the xed jaw a3 and the movable jaw B are corrugated, as at (14,510, whereby to more securely engage the object C.
The rear end of the movable jaw is cut away except at its top and bottom, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and a plate spring b is arranged in the said opening to press against the handle A, the ends of the spring resting within openings bo, and t2, in the aw. The spring is arched toward the handle as shown in Fig. 1, and normally presses the handle toward the opposite side of the opening.
The lower edge of the opening through the A slot a movable jaw is provided with a tooth or pawl bx, for engaging the ratchet teeth a2, and a spring b*s is arranged within the chambered portion of the handle, the said spring having one end secured to the plate a0 by a screw eye t", and the other end by a screw eye t7 is connected with the movable jaw, the screw eye 117 projecting through the slot a before described.
The spring be normally tends to draw the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw, and the bottom edge bx of the movable jaw acts as a pawl to prevent a reverse movement, thus retaining the jaws in their adjusted position. By pressing on the portion b of the movable jaw as shown in Fig. 1, the pawl edge bx is released from the ratchet teeth, and the movable jaw may be moved away lfrom the iixed jaw.
It will be evident from the description, that the movable jaw is slidable on the handle and has a limited movement transversely thereof. Since the pawl is rigid with respect to the movable jaw, a movement of the jaw will move the pawl into and out of engagement with the teeth.
I claim- A wrench comprising a handle provided with a fixed jaw, and having a chambered portion adjacent to the jaw, the face of the handle adjacent to the operative face of the jaw being longitudinally slotted and provided with ratchet teeth, a movable jaw havn ing an opening for receiving the handle, said opening being of greater cross section than the cross section of the handle, a screw-eye connected with the movable jaw and pro- 'j ecting through the slot, a spring having one of its ends connected with the screw-eye and the other to the handle in the chambered portion, a pawl on the movable jaw for engaging the ratchet teeth, and a spring acting normally on the movable jaw to force the pawl into engagement with the ratchet teeth.
FINLEY W. NOTT.
