WRE
No. 886,437. Specification of NCH.
Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 20, 1906.
Application filed June 30,1906. Serial No. 324,176.
To all?, 11171/0711, it Tita/ zj con/007%.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. COCHRAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Glen Easton, in the county of Marshall and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wrenches 5 and its object is to provide a device of this character of simple and inexpensive construction capable of being readily manipulated to adjust it to working position and to release and disengage the opposing jaws.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side eleva tion of a wrench embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line Qc of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the operating-lever of the wrench, and Fig. 5 is a perspectiveview of the housing constituting the movable jaw of the wrench.
The reference numeral 1 designates a shank provided with a handle 2 at one end and an integral curved jaw 3 at its opposite r end, said jaw serving as the xed member of the wrench. Upon the shank 1 is slidably supported a frame or housing comprising side bars 4 and 5, connected at their lower ends by a cross-bar 6 and at their upper ends by an integral jaw 7, the bar 6 and jaw 7 being formed with elongated openings 8 for they passage of the shank.
The front side 4 of the housing is formed with a vertically-disposed slot 9 for the purpose hereinafter mentioned, and the jaws 3 and 7 are recessed for the reception of serrated gripping-blocks 10.
The numeral 11 designates a lever provided with a yoke 12 and bent at the point 13 to project the yoke laterally to a position, at a right angle to the handle portion of the lever. The lever extends through the slot 9 of the housing, and the shank 1 extends through said yoke, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the opening in the yoke being of sufficient size to permit a limited tilting movement of the yoke upon the shank by means of the lever.
A coil-spring 14 encircles the shank 1 within the housing, the lower end of said spring resting on the cross-bar 6, while its upper end bears against a washer 15, the upper face of which is beveled, as shown. The opening in this washer 1.5 is of such size as to permit it to tilt slightly upon the shank.
lnterposed between the yoke 12 and the washer 15 are a plurality of washers 16, four being shown in the drawings. The inner surfaces of the end walls of these washers 16 adjacent to the lever 11 are cut away to provide centrallyprojecting teeth 17, which normally engage `the contiguous side of the shank and bite against the same under the pressure of the spring 14. The beveled upper face of the spring-supported washer 15 causes the washers 16 to maintain the inclined positions shown in the drawings.
The utility and operation of the wrench will be readily understood. Vhen the locking-washers are in the position shown, the movable j aw is locked upon the shank. By depressing the lever 11 the locking-washers are turned to a horizontal position, the spring 14 being compressed by the pressure upon the washers 15 and 16, thus disengaging the teeth of the locking-washers from the shank 1 and permitting the movable jaw to be adjusted to any desired position, after which the lever is released to allow the spring to again lock the movable jaw.
lt will be noted that the several washers 16 act simultaneously and insure a quick and positive frictional engagement of the teeth 17 with the shank.
The wrench is designed for use either as a nut-wrench or a pipe-wrench, and the loca tion of the operating-lever renders the device a simple and convenient implement.
What l claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wrench comprising a shank provided with a fixed jaw, a frame slidably arranged on said shank, and provided with a movable jaw, a lever having a yoke surrounding the shank, a coil-spring surrounding the shank, a washer resting on said spring and having a beveled face, and a plurality of -lockingwashers formed with projecting teeth to engage the shank.
2. The combination with a shank provided IOO with a Xed jaw, of a frame or housing oarryl and beveled washer, each of said lockinging a movable jaw, seid frame or housing bewashers being out away at one side of its ining' movable on the shank, e lever formed ner surface to provide ziprojeeting tooth. with a yoke surrounding the shank, and bent In testimony whereof I el'liX my signature 5 adje-(lient1 to seid yoke, coil-spring surroundin the presence of two witnesses.
ing t e s iank, and restino on the Cross-bar o the housing, e washer on the shank'resting on SAMUEL B COCHRAN' the upper end of seid spring, 'and having its Witnesses: upper face beveled, and a plurality of lock W. H. WILSON,
