Description

Ial
UNITED STATES PATENT @FETQE.
BENJAMAN F. NEDROIV, OF ANAOORTES, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO HIRAM R. ANDREWS, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
WRENCH.
No. sos,25o.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1905.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMAN F. NED- ROW, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Anacortes, in the county of Skagit and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I/Vrenches, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches; and the primary object thereof is to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive construction.
The further object is to so construct the wrench that the several component parts thereof are removable, so that they can be readily replaced when broken or otherwise injured.
A further object is to provide means whereby the movable jaw can be adjusted for gripping bodies of large and small diame- .ters with but a very limited movement of the operating-handle.
With the above and other objects in view, as hereinafter set forth, the invention consists in the parts and combinations of parts described in the following and particularly set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is aview in perspective of the frame in which the movable jaw is pivoted. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of the adjustable connection between the movable jaw and the operating-handle thereof. Fig. 4 is a View in perspective of the present invention, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the pivoted jaw removed.
In carrying out my invention I provide the handle or shank 1 with a fixed jaw 2, which jaw is snu ly embraced by a frame 3. This frame is of approximately U-shaped form and has its closed end bearing on the outer edge of the fixed jaw, so as to prevent any tilting of the frame when it is secured in position by bolt 4.
The movable jaw 5 is pivoted in the upper portion of this frame by suitable means, as bolt 6, and is provided with a rearwardly-extending portion which is formed on its opposite faces or sides with pins 7.
Reference numeral 8 indicates the movable handle which is pivoted to handle 1,
and this handle has an adjustable connec-.
tion with the rearwa'rdly-extending portion of the movable jaw, such connection in the present showing consisting of a yoke which straddles handle 1 and has the free ends of its arms 9 pivoted to handle 8. At the opposite side of handle 1 said arms 9 are formed with longitudinal slots 10, into which project teeth, as 11, for engagement with the pins 7 of the movable jaw. By this construction, prior to any movement of handle 8 for the purposes of swinging the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw for gripping, said movable jaw can be first adjusted so that the body to be gripped will fit snugly between the serrated faces of the respective jaws. Then with but slight movement of handle 8 toward handle 1 said jaws will be caused to tightly impinge said body. Of course to adjust the movable jaw independently of handle 8 said yoke must be swung so that its teeth 11 will be disengaged from pins 7. A spring 12 serves to normally prevent any swinging of the yoke which would tend to dislodge these pins.
By my improved construction I provide a wrench of the type in which one jaw has swinging movement, with means whereby the two jaws can be employed to grip both large and small bodies with approximately the same movement of the handle which operates said movable jaw, thereby enabling the workman to properly grip a pipe, nut, or the like and rotate the same when he has but little space in which to work. I also provide the frame 3 with additional openings, as 14, in which the bolt 6 can be arranged if it is desired to vary the distance between the fixed and movable jaws.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A wrench comprising a handle formed with a jaw, a movable jaw, a U-shaped yoke straddling said handle and provided with teeth, pins on said movable jaw for engagement with the teeth of said yoke, and means to swing said yoke.
2. A wrench comprising a handle provided with a jaw, a frame secured to said jaw, a second jaw pivoted in said frame, a yoke straddling said handle and being formed with teeth, pins on said pivoted jaw for engagement with said teeth, and a handle piv- I engaging said pins, and resilient means for oted to said first handle, said yoke being pivnormally holding the teeth of said means in oted to said last handle. I engagement With said pins.
3. A Wrench comprising a handle provided i Signed at Anacortes, Washington, this 25th 5 With a fixed jaw, a movable jaw having a day of March, 1905.
rearwarclly-extendin portion pins secured T to the rearwardly-ex tending portion of said I BEBJAMAN AEDROlV' movable jaw, a handle pivoted to the first- Witnesses: named handle, a toothed means pivoted to W. G. BEARD,
10 the last-named handle and having its teeth J. W. HUTTON.
