Description

Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
RAYMOND GEOFFROY, OF ARCTIC, RHODE ISLAND.
PIPE-WRENCH.
Application filed May 5, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND GEoFrRoY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arctic, in the county of Kent and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Piperenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pipe wrenches and the primary object thereof is to provide a wrench of this character which has novel means for effecting its quick release and instantaneous grip, so that in coupling pipe on the backward movement of the wrench the latter will be free to return on the pipe, while on forward movement of the wrench the latter will instantaneously and positively grip the pipe.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench possessed of the above features which is of simple and economical construction and effective in operation.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
A wrench constructed according to the present invention embodies a handle member 1 which is provided adjacent to its inner end on one of its sides with a cam face or nose 2.
3 designates the movable jaw, the shank A of which is threaded and engaged by the thumb nut 5, the latter being rotatably mounted in a slot 6 formed in a pivoted fitting 7. The fitting 7 is, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, of U-form, its sides embracing the shank A of the movable jaw 3 and the ends at the bottom of the sides of the fitting ex: tend on opposite sides of the head 8 of handle 1, being pivoted to the latter by means of a pin 9 which is headed to Secure the same in position as depicted in Fig. 3. The sides of the U-fitting 7 at the top of the latter are pivoted by means of a pin 10, similar to pin 9 as above described, to the pivoted jaw 11. Jaw 11 is provided with a depending tail 12 the inner side face of which is beveled as indicated at 13. A U-shaped metallic strap 14 has its ends embracing opposite sides of the handle 1 and is rigidly secured by fastenings 15 to said handle, the strap embrac- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing the tail 12 at the lower end of the latter and thereby restricting the outward movement of the same in an obvious manner. The jaws 3 and 11 are provided with removable toothed jaw faces 16.
In operation the jaw 3 is adjusted to such position as will permit the pipe to be received between the jaw faces 16. The wrench in its idle stroke is released from engagement with the pipe by virtue of the fact that the cam nose 2 of the handle 1 is moved downwardly with respect to the beveled face 13, thereby permitting the tail 12 of jaw 11 to have a slight inward movement. On the working stroke of the wrench the cam nose 2 engages the beveled face 13 and riding on the latter, wedges the same in a direction toward the pipe, causing the jaw 11 to grip the pipe in an obvious manner. The stated movement of the cam nose 2 is due to the fact that the head 8 of the handle 1 is pivoted to the fitting 7, and as the latter has a relative stationary location with respect to the jaw 3, it will be seen that the movement of the handle 1 in the working and idle strokes thereof will effect the movement of the jaw 16 toward and away from the work so as to positively grip the pipe in the working stroke and instantaneously release same on the idle stroke.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a wrench, a handle formed adjacent to its inner end with a cam nose, a fitting pivoted to said inner end of the handle, an adjustable jaw carried by the fitting, a jaw for cooperation with the adjustable jaw pivoted to the fitting and having a tail which extends partly along the length of the handle in spaced relation to the front side edge thereof to a point beyond the cam nose, and means to engage said tail to restrict the pivotal movement of the pivoted jaw, said nose riding on the rear longitudinal side edge of the tail.
2. In a wrench, a handle formed with a cam nose at one end thereof, a U-shaped fitting pivoted at its lower end. to said end of the handle above said cam nose, a jaw pivoted to the upper end of said fitting and having a depending tail which extends below said cam nose and has its rear longitudinal side face in engagement with the cam nose, a U-shaped strap secured to the handle and located below the cam nose and embracing said tail to restrict the pivotal movement of said jaw, and a jaw carried by the fitting for cooperation with said first named aw.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
