SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,474, dated December 5, 1899. Application filed May 20, 1899. Serial No. 717,669. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR O. ROLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harvey, in the county of Brazos and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches of the sliding-jaw type, the object being to'provide a wrench in which the sliding or movable jaw is fulcrumed upon the shank of the station- I ary jaw and movable thereon to and from the stationary jaw in such a manner that the movable jaw moves in the are of a circle with respect to the fixed jaw, so as to clamp a nut or other object which is placed between said jaws and at the same time permit the jaws to be readily separated or held in a fixed position'; and with the above ends in view my invention consists in the combination, with the fixed jaw of a wrench, its shank, and handle, of a movable jaw which is provided with a pawl for engagement with ratchets in the back of the shank of the fixed jaw, the shank of the movable jaw being serrated, together with means for holding the shanks in engagement with each other, as will be hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a plan view; and Fig. 3, a side elevation, partly in section.
A refers to a bar upon which is formed the fixed jawA, the same being preferably curved and provided with serrations. The shank A of the bar is provided on its back with a series of ratchets a, and beyond the ratchets there is provided a yoke A which is rigidly attached to one side of the bar A and extends outward therefrom and then parallel with the flat bar A, its end being on a line with a lug a, which projects from the opposite side of the bar, and between the members of the yoke is pivoted a cam or thumb-latch B, one of the faces thereof being serrated for engagement with the serrated portion a of the bar A. The yoke carries between the pivot of the cam B and its inwardly-bent end a thumb-screw b.
0 refers to a bar upon which is formed the movable jaw O, and the portion opposite said jaw is apertured for the passage therethrough of the shank A of the bar A and opposite the serrated portions of the jaw O has a pawl c,which is adapted to engage with the ratchetteeth a or slide over said ratchet-teeth when the wall of the aperture contacts with the smooth side of the shank A It may be here noted that the shank A slightly increases in width from its fixed jaw toward the handle, so that the length of the serrated portion will limit the movement of the movable jaw thereon. The pawl and ratchets serve as a ful crum for the movable jaw, and when the shank O is raised or moved so that the end of the movable jaw will be moved from the fixed jaw, the movable jaw may be then slid upon the shank; but when an opposite movement is imparted to the movable jaw the pawl will be brought against one of the straight walls of the ratchet and the jaw will be moved toward the fixed jaw, so as to securely clamp and hold a nut or other object which may be passed betweenthe jaws, thus securely clamping a nut, so that it will be held by the implement when removed from a bolt.
In order to hold the shank of the movable jaw in a locked position, the cam or thumblatch may be manipulated so as to bring its serrated and curved face in engagement with the serrated portion a of the shank O. In order to provide means for limiting the pivoted movement of the movable jaw with relation to the bar A, the bar or shank O has its outer face inclined or beveled, as shown at D, and by adjusting the set-screw l) the movement of the bar 0 toward the angular or bent end of the yoke may be determined. The implement may not only be used as a nut-wrench, but may also be used for other purposes, as a pipe wrench or tongs.
I claim 1. In awrenclnthe combination witha shank having a serrated back and a jaw fixedly attached to the end of the shank the width of the shank increasing as it recedes from the fixed jaw, in combination with a shank having a fixed jaw with an aperture therethrough which shank and jaw are adapted for longitudinal movement upon the shank of the fixed jaw, the movable jaw having a pawl for engagements with the ratchets said pawl and ratchets serving as a fulcrum upon which the shank of the movable jaw moves, the parts being assembled so that the shanks lie along side of each other, substantially as shown.
2. In a Wrench, the combination with a shank having on one end a fixed jaw, ratchets in the back of a shank and a yoke beyond the ratchets, a cam or thumb-latch pivoted to the yoke, a movable jaw and shank having a movable fulcrum, the shank passing through the yoke so as to be engaged by the cam, substantially as shown.
3. In a wrench, the combination with the shank having a fixed jaw, a back with ratchetteeth, a lug which projects from the back, a yoke, the yoke and lug carrying'a cam or thumb-latch, a set-screw carried by the yoke EDGAR O. ROLLINS.
