Application filed. April 1S, l9l9.
To all who/1n it may concern Be it known that l, Geenen l-l. Sirone, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk, State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Wrench; and l do hereby decla-re the following to be a full, clear, and enact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to wrenches and has for its object to provide a wrench wherein it will be possible to hold and turn a round rod or pipe, also to provide a wrench of this character wherein it will be possible to hold rods or pipes of different diameters.
A further object is to provide a pipe wrench wherein one j aw is pivoted, one end of said pivoted j aw being adapted to coperate with a jaw carried by the body meinber of the wrench and to provide means at the other end of the pivoted member whereby the jaw thereof will normally be held out of engagement with the jaw of the body of the wrench. also to provide wedging means coperating with the end of the pivoted member whereby the article between the jaws may be securely clamped and held against the action of the means for holding the jaw of the pivoted member ont of engagement with the jaw of the body of the wrench, and to control the wedging means by a grip carried at the handle end of the wrench. y
1With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, showing a rod clamped between the jaws.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the wrench.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of F ig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the body of the wrench, at one end of which a jaw 2 is provided. rlhis jaw 2 has teeth 3 which are adapted to engage Specification of Letters Patent.

and bite into a rod or pipe Il. The other end of the body member l is provided with a handle 5. A chamber 6 is formed in the body member thereby forming sides 7. The forward ends of the sides 7 are provided with ears 8 and pivotally mounted on a bolt 9 which passes through said ears is a pivoted member 10, one end of which is pro- -fided with a jaw 11, having teeth 12 for engagement with the rod el. rlhe rear end 13 or 'the member 10 is provided with an inclined surface 14, which is adapted to be engaged by a tapered block 15 the upper surface of which engages the wall 16 of the chamber 6. lt will be noted that a forward movement of the block 15 will cause the end 18 of the pivoted member 10 to be forced downwardly against the action of a spring 1S. which is disposed between the end 13 and the bridge 19. The spring normally keeps the jaws of the wrench apart and the wedge block is moved forwardly to close the jaws.
Pivotally secured at 20 to the block 15 is a connection rod 21, the other end of which is pivoted at 22 to the arm 23 of the bell crank 24. rlhe bell crank 2d is pivoted as at 25 in the chamber 6. Arm 26 of the bell crank 24 is so disposed that when the hand of the user of the wrench is on the handle thereof the arm 26 may be grasped for tightly wedo'ing the block 15 so that the jaws of the wrench closely engage the ar- A spring 27 is disposed between the arm 26 and the handle 5 and is of sufllcient strength to assist in withdrawing the block 15 from its wedging position.
The operation is as follows, the pipe or rod el is placed between the jaws, then the handle is grasped by the operator and the lingers placed aronnd the arm 26, then a squeezing action 'is exerted on the arm 26. rlhis squeezing action will rock the bell crank lever 24 and the connecting rod 21 will force the tapered block 15 into jamming position between the inclined surface 14e of the pivoted lever 10 and the wall 17 of the chamber 6. lt will be seen that the jaws will be forced toward each other, thereby clamp ing the article therebetween, however when the arm 26 of the bell crank is released the tapered block will be forced rearwardly by the action of the pivoted member and the spring 27, thereby in conjunction with the springV 18 release the article from between the jaws. Y
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A wrench comprising a handle of U- shaped formation in cross section, a fixed jaw projecting from one end of the handle, a movable` jaw pivoted on the same end of the handle and having a curved surface projecting within the handle, a transverse plate extended across the open side of the handle, a spring bearing upon said plate and connected with the adjacent end of the movable jaw for holding the latter normally spaced from the fixed jaw, a wedge slidably mounted within the handle, a bell crank lever pivoted on the handle adjacent the opposite end thereof and having one branch projecting Within the handle, yieldable means for normally holding the otherbranch spaced from the handle, and a connecting rod joining the rst mentioned branch with said wedge whereby the latter is operated to close the jaws when the bell. crank lever is moved toward the handle.
In testimony whereof l have Signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
