Description

PATENTED OCT. 23, 1906.
A. MEIBRHOFF.
PIPE WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 26,1906.
citizen of the United States,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 23, 1906.
Application filed March 26, 1906. Serial No. 308,172.
To all whom, it may concern: i
Be it known that I, AnoLF MEIERHOFF, a residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Pipe-Wrenches, ofwhich t e following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this s ecification.
My invention relates to that class of Wrenches used for gripping and turning round objects; and it has for its object to so construct a wrench that it may be speedily adjusted to fit various-sizedobjects, such as pipes.
Figure I is a side elevation of my wrench. Fig. II is arear elevation of my wrench.
1 designates the shank of my wrench having a fixed jaw 2 near its forward end provided with a serrated face 3. The shank terminates at its forward end in the nose 4.
5 designates a movable jaw member, composed of a jaw 6, having a serrated face 7 and an arm 8 and angularly disposed to the jaw 6 and provided with a plurality of pockets 9, 9 and 9 in which the nose 4 of the shank 1 is ada ted to seat.
10 esignates a pair of links located at the sides of the wrench. These links are pivoted to the shank 1 at 11 11 and are provided with slots 12, that receive studs 13, carried by the arm 8 of the jaw member 5. This slot-and-stud connection allows thelinks 10 to move freely and the member 5 to be swung free from the shank-nose 4.
When my wrench is in operation, the movable jaw 6 is first placed in position with its inner grip ing-face 7 touching the pipe or other round oii'ect to be operated upon, the nose 4 being at this time released from all of the pockets 9, 9 or 9*. The serrated face 3 of the fixed jaw 2 is then brought in contact with the object to be gripped at a point diametrically opposite the point in contact with the jaw 6. The shank-nose 4 is then seated in one of the pockets 9, 9, or 9', accordin to thesize of the object to begripped, (t e adjustment being clearly seen in Fig. I by the parts in dotted position showing the movement of the links 10 and the seating of the nose 4 in the pocket 9.) When pressure is brought to .bear on the shank of the wrench, serving to press the jaw 2 a ainst the object to be gripped, the jaw 6 is likewise forced against the object b reason of the nose 4 being so set in a poo et 9, 9*, or 9 that the pressure on the shank Will cause the jaw 2 to be moved forwardly and communicate a rearward movement to the arm 8 and through it to the jaw 6, thus securing a grip on the object between the jaws in a ratio to the pressure exerted on the shank 1.
While I have described my improvement wrench, I Wish to call attention to the fact that the device is of such nature that it may be readily and efficiently used for clamping or drawing action upon members to which it may be applied, and thus have the action of a pair of tongs or a clamp.
In so using the device it may be of utility in drawing two or more objects together or for forcing a bolt, nail, or other fastening through objects that are to be joined by such fastening.
I claim- 1. In a pipe-wrench, the combination of a shank having a jaw near its forward end and a nose at its forward end, a movable jaw member consisting of a jaw and an arm angularly disposed relative to said jaw, and links connecting said shank to said movable jaw member; said links being provided with slot-and-pin connection to one of said members and said jaw-member arm being provided with a pocket to receive the forward end of said shank, substantially as set forth.
2. In a pipe-wrench, the combination of a shank having a jaw near its forward end and a nose at its forward end, a movable jaw member consisting of a jaw and an. arm angularly disposed relative to said jaw; and links connecting said shank to said movable jaw member said links being provided with slot-and-pin connection to one of said members and said jaw-member arm being provided with a plurality of pockets to receive said shank-nose, substantially as set forth.
